Hi there,

I have a new (to me) 1980 Hunter 36 and I'm trying to track down where the water in the bilge is coming from. The panel above the engine leaks - so I have a question - how does the 'pan' under the engine drain? I can't seem to see any holes in it that would lead to the bilge. And there is there any draining from the cockpit/engine area to the bilge?

Hi Alctel. I dont think the pan below the engine is meant to drain. I think the idea for that is to catch any oil or antifreeze that might drip into the bilge in the first place. It only holds a litre or two. As for the leaking hatch over the engine I think I will Install a heavy duty gasket ( I havent located one yet ),as mine also leaks.Im sure you must be getting used to the west coast rain by now. The cockpit drains run behind the engine bay and out via 2 outlets to the sea. hope this helps . Mike

No

I agree no drain under engine for safety reason to keep any spills from
going into bilge and than out into outside waters:eek:.
Bilge water can come from many different places and will take long time searching for where ever leaking, does do it when it rains or some thing inside.

Re: No

Alctel:

Give me some time when I have some more time and I will post info. Definitely the pan under the engine is there to catch leaks of oil or transmission fluid from getting into the bilge. And it will not allow fluids into the bilge unless grossly over filled. But also it could collect water if your cockpit sole hatch seal isn't in good shape.

Your leaks are more likely from the hull to deck to toe rail joint which is often neglected ... and maybe can be rectified by tightening the toe rail bolts. Actually just did this for the second time since I owned my boat because during the only intense San Francisco rainstorm this year a couple of weeks ago, I found a couple of unexpected inches of fresh water in my bilge. After tightening again, no extra H2O intrusion over the last couple of raining nights.

Give me a day or two and I will post either new description, or links to my previous Cherubuni Hunter 36 posts on the rain leak causes and remedies.

That would be great, thanks!

I'm considering vacuuming the bilge out and putting drops of non-toxic dye around the edges of the bilge - at least I can see which direction it's coming from

2 of the best things to use is
1 talcum powder sprinkle it and you can see the tracks the water makes
Best option

2 koolaide with out sugar in it (beware this stuff is GREAT for tracing leaks but murder to clean up)

Well, I got some talcum power

Good news - I think I found the leak (circled in red)

Bad news - the weird plastic transducer is leaking. It's under the sofa in front of the water tank, and I think the water is running down from that area into the bilge. It's a paddle-wheel type that isn't even connected. I'm annoyed because I was really close to replacing the entire thing with an actual working transducer when I was hauled out but didn't.

You can see in the picture where it is leaking, around the top of the 'ring'.

I am going to haul out again in 6 months, so is covering the entire top with marine sealant, waiting till it dries and covering THAT with marine tex a good idea? I don't care about fixing it in - the transducer I want to replace it with uses a 2" hole (current one is 1.5") so the entire thing will be cut out anyway.

No That is a very bad idea! I know it sucks to say this but if that water is coming up through the transducer. I would not wait 6 mo to fix it. that is call for a haul out asap. Even if it is just to pull the transducer and fix the fiber glass and drop her back in. not knowing what kind of transducer it is they can be pretty empty and if it breaks off or busts through you could be looking at having a very serious problem on your hands. kinda like saying my seacock is leaking I'll just patch it and wait 6 mo and put a new one in. A three-inch hole located one foot below the waterline will allow 177 gallons of water per minute to enter a boat. The same size hole located at three feet below the waterline will produce a flooding rate of 306 gallons a minute. Any sizable hole encountered below the waterline will sink the average boat in a matter of minutes. So your call mate patch pray and wait. or bite the bullet and fix now.

a decent article to look over.
