I have a question for all sailors. My husband and I are trying to decide whether to buy the Hunter 356 or the Beneteau 361. Both dealers will match each others price so the cost is not a problem. The problem is we can't decide with boat to buy. I really love the Hunter 356 but my Husband is a little concerned about the B&R rig. We presently own a 1980 C&C 34 and before that my Husband owned a J24. So even thought crusing is the many reason for buying a new boat, he still wants great performance. Any response will be greatly appreciated.

Chicago Boat show

I saw them both at the Chicago Boat show. I am a Hunter 240 owner so take the bias how you may. I preferred the Hunter. I can't comment on sailing speed etc., and I'm just commenting on the aesthetics of the two boats. I did not like the wood laid on the cockpit seats on the Beneteau. I did not like the high step over into the companionway on the Beneteau and I thought the steps down the companionway on the Beneteau were very steep. I'd spend my money on the Hunter 356 or the 386 which I felt offered a lot more room for not that much more money.

Beneteau vs. Hunter

Jodi, I am going to take the opposite side here. I have a 2000 Beneteau 361 and I am absolutely thrilled with the boat. I have had no problems what so ever. She sails and handles well. I thnk she is quite roomy, in fact I am starting to get her ready for some long term cruising I intend to do several years from now. I think the one complaint that I do have is the small fuel tank. While 20 gals. is great for coastal cruising up and down Long Island Sound, I would have preferred a larger tank for bluewater cruising. Gook luck with whatever decision you make. I am sure that you will have plenty of input on this web from both Beneteau and Hunter owners Charlie Gruetzner S/V Angels' Grace

Check Keel and bilge sump

My wife and I went from an Express 35 to a Hunter 460 with the B&R. The Hunter will be much easier to sail than a boat with a large Genoa such as the Beneteau. Also the Hunter has a lead keel vs. iron. Much easier upkeep. Also, the Beneteaus don't have a deep sump like the Hunters. This means that if water gets in the bilge, it can get into other ares when the boat is heeled and the weather is rough. Both the Beneteau and Hunter will perform well but neither is a serious racer. If you want a racer, buy a racer. If your C&C is a deep keel version, its tough to beat on the race course. Also, look at the Beneteau 40.7. Its fast and not too expensive.
