Looking to buy a Hunter 35, just did survey, very cold!!. Couple items on the survey i would love any input on, Blisters, mainly on the rudder, small ans quite a few and about 5 per side on the keel at the hull where the fbglass hull attached to the keel. Also, the "cap? with a bolt through it" on top of rudder shat has a hairline crack. I haven't recieved the survey as we just did it yesterday thus the reason for the vagueness. any information good or bad about these issues and the 35 overall would be appreciated.

Don't make any decisions until you've read the written survey. It is the document of record and in my experience can describe a boat entirely differently than the oral report of the surveyor.

Since this is a "purchase" survey I would bet the surveyor recommends either repair or replace rudder due to "crack" and blisters. Also get an estimate on repairing hull blisters at keel as well as rudder replacement. The price should either reflect the repair cost or be deducted from your offer price. There are way too many boat available to mess around with this if seller does not agree move on. Of course wait until you get the full written survey but I would hope the surveyor gave you some sort of feel for what he was going to recommend.

This doesn't sound too serious as described. A few hull blisters usually is of no to little concern. The rudder may be minor or not. It depends on whether there is water inside. The cracked ring you mentioned may be the rudder retainer or it might be the quadrant. In either case, it is replaceable. Wait for the written report then discuss with him and with a repair tech or yard.

One item to double check is the foredeck. These boats were notorious for deck delamination from the jib furler liines coming through the deck. If this area has not been properly sealed you want to be sure that you do this if you decide to purchase her.

I would agree that those few blisters on the keel stub are no big deal. They may even be paint blisters.

As far as your rudder is concerned, I think you are probably looking at about $2k for a replacement, which may be a good idea considering some of the reported issues. You can contact Foss Foam about a replacement and your yard can give you an estimate on the labor.

I bought an '88 H35 ten years ago. The survey uncovered
1. delamination (fixed) near deck penetration where furling line entered.
2. delaminated rudder (replaced)
3. replaced metal fuel tank with plastic.
Love the boat. Sails like a dream. Since purchase have added/replaced
1. toilet
2. sails
3. furler
4. canvas
5. bimini

The blisters on the rudder sounds pretty minor and not unexpected on a 20 plus year old boat. If the rudder is in good shape otherwise, no reason they couldn't be ground out and filled very easily if they bug you. Considering the blisters on the hull are around the keel stump, it's very possible they are in the fairing compound and not in the actual gelcoat. You're surveyor should have taken moisture readings and sounded out the deck and rudder. Major concerns would be if there is wet hull laminate, wet core in deck/cabin top or rudder and large areas of delamination. Don't be afraid to call your surveyor if you have questions about the written report. Often the survey can give you more insight and advice verbally since the written report needs to have more CYA language in it.
