check all the connections for corrosion.
Does the motor have a RPM sender or does it use the alternator for a signal?

Sender

pretty sure you have rear sender near the trans and where motor meet,if you,if you can get a yanmar manual maybe on this forum or internet it has helpful ways to test the sender.
Check all wires and connections and grounds before thinking of changing tach.

On my engine the sender is also at the flywheel on the port side. Looks like a small pill bottle with two wires coming out of it. it is right under the drain for the raw water so it gets salt water on it if you are not careful in winterizing. and that rusts the terminals badly.

If I remember correctly, there's a procedure to test the RPM sensor. I think it involves checking the resistance of the sensor, and then checking the voltage output with the engine running. You're looking for a small AC voltage, because its output is a waveform. A quick Google search should turn up the exact process and the readings you're looking for. If it reads good, then check the voltage where the wiring harness connects to the tachometer. If it's good there as well, then you have a bad tach.
