I am considering a Hunter 340 and have been revieving the archives regarding any comparisons of the boat with or without roller furling main. Can anyone give me some insight into the actual performance difference. Any other input as to what I should or should not look for in the boat would be gratly appreciated. Thanks.

Daryl: I bought my 376 last year (1996) and I was nervous about the in mast system already on the boat. I had heard stories of jamming, poor performance, etc. However, I have come to really enjoy the system. The system is 5 years old (came standard on the boat) and worked flawlessly every time. It is ridiculously easy to reef...... don't even have to luff up to do it, and there is no storing or flaking the sail after each use. I suppose there is a performance loss to some degree. However, I don't plan to race (maybe the odd race here and there), and trying to squeeze the last 1/2 knot out of the sails was not an issue. Also,it is easy to balance the sails if weather helm is an issue, which it is for me. Just roll a little of the main up in the mast and......no more weather helm. If there is a drawback, it does take quite a few cranks on the winch to get it furled. But it is still a shorter process than dousing a "normal" mainsail. I say go for it if you are not a dyed in the wool racer......... Jeff

H340 in mast furling

Go for the Selden in mast main sail furling. Its very convenient and usually a pleasure to use.BUT keep the main halyard tight so the sail does not get a wrinkle in it and jam as our did.The dealer corrcted the problem but we are awaitingrepair to the sea hood where the lines damaged the underside from too much tensioning.
