I recently purchased a 1984 Hunter 34 and the interior smells like a gas station bathroom. Among other things I would like to remove the wall carpet and replace it with a hard surface than can be painted. I like the look of beaded board but I do not think it will be flexible enough to go everywhere. Any ideas?

Mark...

First thing to do is to find the source of the "gas station bathroom" odor. Eliminate that first or your efforts may not be worthwhile.

You can strip off the "wall covering" as others have and install a new replication. Going to something more ridgid may present difficulties due to the various compound curves found inside the cabin and hull contours.

Try searching the owners' improvements forum found elsewhere on this site for some solutions others have found.

Replacement "mouse fur" .. http://www.sailrite.com/HullBlanket...et-Type-Silver-Grey-M66?sc=46&category=121367
Some folks have glued in wooden furring strips to which they've attached long thin wood strips..
I have thought about using something like this :http://www.homedepot.com/p/TrafficM...ng-24-sq-ft-case-53712/100609202#.UiY1nza1Efs
in the vee berth.. it is fairly thin, water resistant, and flexible and could be glued to the inside of the hull once the mouse fur is removed.

The vinyl flooring is a great idea, Claude. Do you think that self-adhesive would adhere to fiberglass, be adequate for the marine environment or do you think it might need some help for vertical installations such as v-berth walls.

Richard, their self adhesive is only on the board edges to stick the boards together.. I think the boards would have to be assembled then glued to the hull using something to hold pressure on the stuff to get it to stay flexed while the glue sets.. Run by Depot and look at these .. it is pretty good looking stuff and relatively thin and flexible.

Thanks, all for the ideas. I like the vinyl flooring idea. Seems like it might be flexible enough to handle to contours.

I used the vinyl flooring Claude shows for the floor of my H25. It sticks together to make one solid piece. It has held up very well. It is very heavy though and I wouldn't want it on the walls.

I was in a very high end powerboat a while back in french polynesia that had weaved wicker cloth on the walls. I've been considering that. You can buy it in rolls.
