The complete makeover of my H34 is almost finished, and sporting her new name "Morning Mist", should splash around the middle of April.
Just a few mechanical jobs left to finish and my "better than new" [thats' what my yard are promising] sailboat will be ready for a new life.

I have an issue with the throttle though, it will not stay in the fully open position and slowly closes to the half way position.
I think something is missing from the cable assembly.

Therefore I am hoping that someone can advise what is supposed to keep the cable in the position required ?

when i had my 34 it had a little clamp on the cable near the engine. you could tighten or loosen it to create or decrease friction in side the cable. and by the way i could never get mine just right, it also wanted to go back to idle.

Mine also had the "j" clamp near the engine. I moved mine last year to a location on the cable just where it turns to go up the pedestal- in the aft cabin. I found a set of instructions for this sort of device that said to mount it as near to the lever head as possible. It does make sense as there is less cable to bend and flex, and it does indeed work better. Harder to get to for adjustments though.

My H34 uses...

a u-bolt type cable clamp on the throttle cable near the shaft log. Until I picked up on that clamp here on the forum I was having the same problem holding a set RPM. It creates just enought friction to hold cruise setting all day long without binding up when quick action is needed.

Tennis Ball

It took a long time for us to get that little clamp set to just the right tension. The temporary fix (which worked quite well) was to stick a tennis ball between the throttle lever and the side of the binnacle. Of course the dog was jealous...

Throttle

Hi Roy, most Edson pedestals have a friction key close to where the cable connects to the lever that can be adjusted to keep the desired throttle position. That may be a solution for you, that is if you have Edson equipment.

Terry...

the H34's generally had Merriman pedestals, not Edsons. They look a lot alike but are harder to find parts for...

throttle stiff on advance

I would like to replace the throttle cable on a 1983 34H. Problem I have now is the tension is very very stiff on throttle advancement. Works ok when slowing throttle. Equipment is all original. I tried spraying lube and dripping 3 in 1 one oil down from the pedestal under the compass? This yielded nothing. Would like to try replacing the cable. Anyone have any specs to forward so I may look up in maybe west marine, defender etc? Thanks Jim

The usual procedure is to measure the one

you are using and soon after replacing the cable forgetting its length.

Re: throttle stiff on advance

I thought I had a siezed throttle cable but found the throttle shaft where it enters the Yanmar was coroded from an old water leak. Cleaned it up applied a little 3 in one oil and it's good to go.

spray lps 1

Just worked on the problem this weekend with success! I disassembled the pedestal merriman I think. Removed the compass and top part of the assembly to gain some access to the throttle and shift cables. I wish I could find a manual on the pedestal. I was able to spray lps1 through the spray straw into the cable end. Moved the throttle and sprayed a couple of times to loosen it up. It worked. I was afraid to torque on the assembly to go further because of everything looked like screws would shear if I started down this path. I need to find out a direct replacement if such an animal exists. If anyone has any info on the old pedestal or a replacement please forward the info. Thanks Jim

Roy-

When do we get a writeup of the makeover? That's a big investment you made!

Loncoin for the galley

ZDS:

Our cabin sole in the galley area started looking poorly after dripping water, dropping stuff etc.

I got a piece of Loncoin from Catalina. The stuff is just about impervious to just about anyting you can do to it. It was not cheap, but it was a very easy fix. Just cut it to size and attach it with spray contact cement.

Ah, interesting fix. Unfortunately mine is structurally unsound, requiring complete replacement, and I'm not looking forward to removing the galley cabinets that are in the way.

I totally understand. That is going to be a real bugger.
Just finished a full replacement of the sole of my H34 1986 with pressure-treated plywood and teak boards. The work was done by the man who maintains the boat and he did a super job.
We took advantage of the moment to replace the entire sewage system.
$$$ but it now works like a dream and the foor shows very well. See for yourselves.

David: That looks wonderful. I know that $$$ means some large dollar, but how much was it?

Did the teak over the marine ply raise the sole to be flush with the cross members of the grid?
