>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Original post follows <<<<<<<<<
The complete makeover of my H34 "Morning Mist" is almost complete. We expect to launch her sometime this coming week.
As requested and promised here are the first of the photos which will be posted into this thread.

These photos show the re-finished mast, less spreaders, ready rigged for the trip back to my dock in Vermilion and the hull and decks sporting their new Awlgrip finish after significant re-coring of deck wet areas.
The new Lemar metal opening ports were being installed when I took these photos. Photos coming soon.

Note that the spots on the photos were created by dust on my camera lens :-(

More photos will be posted into this thread very soon.

Roger...

I noticed that you have only one dorade vent opening on the box. Did the boat come that way? My H34 and all others I've seen have a two opening dorade.

Your work looks like a great make-over. Are they new anti-skid strips installed? I like the paint sceme--my last boat was turned out in the same color combo--blue hull/red bottom--SHARP!

Dan,

Perhaps you did not notice but the complete top molding under which all the sheets are led and the Dorades mount on has not yet been refitted. My Hunter 34 has two Dorades just like all H34's of that period.

The none skid areas have all been sanded down removing the "pebbled" surface and then have been painted with beige anti-skid "paint". [Sorry I forget the name of the anti-skid]

The sanding was necessary because a significant portion of the Port side decking has been removed to re-core it. Similar re-coring, by complete removal of the deck skin has been done in several locations including part of the cockpit floor. This H34 will be good for another 25 years :)

The new dodger canvas, main sail cover etc are also beige Sunbrella to matching the anti skid areas.

Transom lettering

Roy,
I love the font you used for boat name. Can you tell me more about it. Font type, letter size, what affects were used, who did it for you?

Thanks,

You're right Roy...

not only did I get your name wrong, but I didn't enlage the deck shot to see that the storm cover had been removed! So that's what it looks like under there! I've got a leak that I believe originates somewhere under that cover and your shot will help me try to pinpoint it. Fine job!

Information

Roy,

Thanks for the info on lettering. Another question regarding your photos and in particular the sliding plexiglass hatch. My hatch tends to pool water in the center since it sags a little after all these years and contributes to the water leaking inside to the cabin. I was thinking about pulling the hood and flipping the hatch over giving me a hump in the middle so it will immediately shed water to the channels on the sides. I can't tell from photo but will the hatch slide right out after the hood is removed. I didn't mention it before but really nice job!

Randy

Randy asked about the lettering....

Be carefull when refitting the cover over the companionway hatch. The screws go though from the top and then though a gap and into the cabin roof. If the screws move, and they will, water will get into the roof.

I tried to remove my cover but it has been sealed down onto 5200 at the edges so its there forever! I did removed the screws from the leaky area however, dremelled large holes in the cover to get access to the screw holes in the cabin roof. I then cleaned up the surface , put more 5200 into the screwholes and put a screw into the holes just to seal them. I then put more 5200 into the cover just to make it look better but the cover is now only held down in places by the 5200 and not the screws.
Hope this makes sense.

its looking really god Roy. look forward to the next photos

Randy I really don't know if the plexiglass will slide right out after removing the attachments.
It certainly looks like it will.

I don't have any problem with water collecting on it and leaking into the cabin.
Turning the plexiglass over sounds like a smart idea if it will work.
I have uploaded another photo showing that area a little better.

Kevin,

The majority of the work has been entrusted to Gary Disbrow whose shop is in Vermilion.
I worked up the complete scope of the work required and have sourced and supplied many of the replacement parts.
Gary and his guys have done an excellent job.

Kevin, where are you based ?

I found that our water problems resulted from the water collecting in the rails. The forward end of the rails are open which allowed water to migrate forward and the aft ends of the track were usually plugged with dirt, leaves, bugs etc.

I would suggest that you try plugging the forward ends of the track and getting a cover for the companionway. It helps keep the track clean and the water out.

I assumed it was Disbrow or Butch. Butch has done several boats at Harbor North (where I have been the last few years). I'll have to take a look at yours to compare the quality of the two. I get to Vermillion fairly often since it's a nice day sail for lunch and a friend keeps his T-10 there. This year I am moving to Battery Park for the summer, I'll return to Harbor North for the winter.

Do you sail out to the islands, Huron or Sandusky Bay or just hang around Vermillion Hopefully, I'll see you on the lake this summer.,

Kevin,

Last season was our first year sailing on Erie and we dock at Parsons.
So we did not get too far away from Vermilion. This year we will sail a lot more and hopefully spent the odd weekend at the islands.
I know Harbor North of course.

Hopefully we will get to see sail together !

Looks amazing!

To begin it looks amazing. I was wundering about your mast, did they remove all the hardware to paint it or just tape it up, also the mast doesnt look like it has a big bend, is it original??

AJ,

All the mast hardware was totally removed before stripping the old chipped paint, then priming and painting with two part epoxy. The stripping was the hardest part.
The boom has also been re-painted as well as the spinnaker pole which previously was unpainted.

I have rewired the mast and fitted new steaming and anchor lights.
I don't know if the mast is original but for sure the boat had been raced hard on Lake Ontario in a previous life. As far as we could see the mast is in good condition.

Gorgeous Roy! And glad to see that you spelled Vermilion correctly on the boat even though it is wrong in your Avatar(note Kevin). Kevin and I used to be dockmates at HN before he moved "uptown".

You should have a great sailing season after what was obviously a lot hard work. I really miss Lake Erie and the islands.

The bottom paint is normal VC 17.

The topsides and decks were all done in Awlgrip.
