Nice job, question how to remove damaged flooring for replacement in galley area. Original floor installed and cabinet/sink then put in place.

Gally Floor replacement

Herman67,

I am looking at the same project. Floor is rotting due to a leak in my starboard cockpit drain when heeling in excess of 15% to the starboard. I think there might be a crack in the glass tube but I am waiting for cooler weather to explore in that cavern. My intent is to simply cut off the flooring near the edge of the sink cabinet (tool undetermined) so as not to have to remove the cabinets, plus the wood under the cabinet is solid. Replace with a floor section using trim like the access panels at the juncture with remaining floor. Question is what will I find underneath (likely hair from the PO dog) as supporting structure for the floor and will that need rebuild. Also I need to locate a supplier of the thin flooring used by hunter and determine how to secure the insert. However befor replacing I need to fix the leak.

floor replacement

I just finished replacing the aft floor in my 1983 Hunter 34. I removed the cabinets and stripped the varnish and revarnished them. This is a big job. Part of the problem is that there is lots to do once the cabinets are out. The leaky water heater hoses to the engine were replaced. The original plumbing was replaced with pex. The laminate on the countertop was replaced. The plastic doors under the sink were replaced and fixed to slide all the way back. On and on and on. The floor was replace with the 3/4 in teak and holly plywood the PO left me. It was worth the effort but it was 4 months of hard work. I don't work quickly. There is a cross member in the grid that can be used to attach a partial floor. You can cut out the floor with a clever Dremil tool that is a miniture cut off saw. I got mine at Home Depot. Here is the problem. In the galley, the floor is not attached to the section by the engine. You will need to fiberlass a brace under the floor and next to the engine cabinet to avoid flex here. I wish I had done it. It was also handy to remove a section of the ice box cabinet at the floor level to check your ice box drain (mine was leaking badly) and get to the floor that goes under the cabinet.

Thanks Jacque, great looking job. Appears best way is to remove cabinets as you did. Hoped for an easier way. Will ponder tackling a 3 month job.

Jacques...

Interesting that you removed the stove/oven setup. Do you plan to use the space above the drawer for something else (storage, ? )?

Herman - I think you can replace the floor by taking out the cabinets in a 2 or 3 weeks if you don't do anything else.

Dan - Thanks. I put a big drawer in the bottom and a bin in the top of the space where the stove was. We use an electric cassette or butane burner if we need to cook that way. Mostly we use the microwave and the propane grill.

Jacque...

Clever ideas! The galley could use more storage!

I kept the burner unit, put a dorm fridge where the oven was, and use a microwave and a Geo Forman electric grill if need be.

Re: Jacque...

Did the galley floor on my H34 (`83) 2 seasons ago. It was a tough job but worth it. There was so much junk under the floor I couldn`t believe it. Dog hair, sludge and bits and pieces plugged all my weeping holes that allowed water to drain to the bilge. I will attach a few pics that show the support structures under the floor.
Sorry, tried to attach pics but don`t know how. If someone can tell me how I will send them.

The discussion on floor replacement is greatly appreciated and I am looking foward to hearing where one can purchase replacement floor. However, there has been little if any discussion on the causal factor for the water causing the rot. In my case it appears to be a leak in the starboard cockpit tube. While I have not been in the lazurette while heeling 15%+ that is the only time I have a water incursion issue. Less heel, port heel no issues so that fairly isolates the cause. It does appear that a previous reseal was attempted. Sorry no pics. Anyone else have a diagnosis and solution experience?

Additional thought...

I'm under the impression that, if you're going to replace the cabin sole panels, it wouldn't hurt to seal the underside of the new flooring as this seems to be the side that begins to rot in the first place.

If doing so, what are you going to use?

cause of leak

Mark I am pretty sure my galley floor was rotted by the water coming out of the ice box drain. It never drained into the main bildge where the drain hose went. It drained into the shallow bilge just forward of the main bilge. When I cut out the old drain pipe fiberglassed to the ice box, it had a hole drilled in it. It had to have come that way from the factory. The water drained into the fiberglass grid and came out the forward main cabin bilge. It rotted the floor there too.
