I was planning to replace the zincs on my 1987 Hunter 34 engine and I cant find them where the manuel says they are. The engine is a Yanmar 3GM30F. I see two bolt heads on top of the cylinders that could be them, I have not been able to loosen them yet to see. Any thoughts?

Your engine doesn't have them because...

it's fresh water cooled. Only engines that are raw-water cooled have them. ~ Happy sails to you ~ _/) ~

fresh water cooled

My engine is fresh water cooled, and it is raw water cooled. Unless there is something that I don't understand. There is a raw water intake that circulates and is expelled through the exhaust.

The engine fresh water cooled system does...

not have zincs and is sealed and separate from the raw water system. The engine raw water pump brings cool sea water into the heat exchanger, which is used to keep the engine cool. I've seen a heat exchanger with a pencil zinc (our P42 Onan generator), but no propulsion engine zincs on fresh water cooled systems. Terry

Technically...

Your engine is not raw-water cooled. Raw-water doesn't circulate within the water jacket of the engine. It goes through a heat exchanger where it passes through tubes that are in contact with the fresh-water that does circulate through the engine's water jacket. Thus, your engine doesn't need (or have) zincs. ~ Happy sails to you ~ _/) ~

Yup, tracked down the raw water path and no,

the 3GM30F doesn't have zinc's because there is no conflicting metals that could cause electrolysis. Relax and enjoy. :)

No part number for zinc on 3GM30F :)

Yanmar does not have a part number for the zinc on the 3GM30F since it doesn’t have one. Check the Yanmar part numbers used for their marine diesel engines on their website. Fair Winds, Clyde

I think the manual covers both versions.

Jim: If you are looking at the Yanmar manual, I think that they cover both the GMxxF and GMxxC. Yours is the F (fresh water cooled). The manual is not very clear on this issue. We have been assured by the experts that the F models do not require an engine zinc.
