Went to the boat today and found the bilge pump on ( had the auto switch on)and finally 2 dead batteries. Someone at the marina told be to install some kind of buld that keeps the water from backing into the bilge? Any suggestions? Thank you Richard (Duke)

Water in the bilge

you want the water to run into the bilge. That way the pump can get rid of it for you. If you make it "back up" somewhere else you are going to have compartments full of water instead of a bilge full of water. I suspect that you need to pull some maintenance on your float switch. I probably got slimed up over the winter and then stuck in the on position. A good hosing should fix you up for the season.

Check Valve

Probably what they mean is a check valve on the output hose of the pump. That stops gravity emptying the remaining water column from the pump to the discharge) in the hose. I'm not sure that's enough water to keep your pump continually cycling on and off though. I don't know about your 1999 boat but my 1983 34 has a check valve outside of the bilge just under the edge of the sole. It's sort of hidden, follow the discharge line and you should find it. Bill Roosa has a great point. If your switch is the float type it could easily hang up mechanically (with the switch closed) and keep the pump running.

Cycling vs constant running

If the pump is constantly running it is probably a stuck float, if it is cycling it is probably do to what Bob P is talking about. The pump sucks up the last of the water it can pump and then cycles off, the water in the discharge hose dumps back into the bilge through the pump and triggers the pump switch. you can prevent this by raising the float switch and tolerating more water in the bilge.
