I have a deck steped mast on a 336, 56 feet up. would like to know if anyone has tried to let mast aft, with a set of blocks in place of forestay ? need to get under the 49 foot railroad bridge west of indiantown fl. do not know how far mast step extends into mast, or if it would be possible to remove bolts holding mast step and replace the two rear ones with longer ones during operation ? how is step sealed ? Ideas ? seven 35 gal containers on the rail puts it under a 53 foot bridge, but will not come close to 49 feet. jim

I don't Think So

I guess you will here better fromm 336 owners who know better, but I have of some who hook up heavy 55 barrels to your halyard and heel the boat to clear bridge,I would be interested to know how much they can do and what is the hightest mast hight that can be done like can a 56 ft high mast maybe. nick

If you are only going to transit this bridge once in a awhile, have you checked the low tide clearance? I would never move the boat with the mast 'raked' backward; if thats, what you're implying. Even if you could insure that the mast base was somehow a fixed hinge situation, it seems that with the lowers slacked by the mast being raked back, you would have no side support and run the risk of the mast moving off centerline at the slitest bounce and getting out of control.

You run the risk of catapaulting the rig, and God only knows what would happen then.

what about

using some collapsable water containers? Hang them from the end of the boom, swing the boom out, dunk them in the water and fill them, tie the boom forward like a preventer, and hoist the containers up at the end of the boom. when they are in the water they would displace their own weight and effectively weigh nothing. As you lift them they will heel the boat. I have seen this method used to get off a sandbar.

I went under that bridge

Jim, I went under that bridge 2 years ago with my hunter 30 and its 50 foot mast with antenna she measures 52. Two of us hung off the boom and healed the boat to about 12 degrees( We tried it in the middle of the lake to see how far we could go and determine the best position). We still scraped the flexible antenna by a coulple inches. The day we did it the clearance was 50 3/4 ft. You would have to go alot farther than I did. There is a company (I'm sure in that area its more like 2 guys with a pickup and some plastic barrels) that will heal the boat for you to go under it for $150. I believe the lockmaster gave me the number when I inquired. I also believe if memory serves me there was another bridge about 55 feet along the route.Wish I could post a picture but the guy holding the camera forgot to take the lens cap off, but I got some good audio...
