OK, I need to replace the original flexible bladder holding tank on my '79 Hunter 33. I know there is an article in the photo forum on someones boat that replaced the bladder with a rigid tank, is there anyone else on this forum that has done this replacement? What size tank did you use and where did you mount it? Thanks all!

holding tank replacement

The tank as shown by the photo forum article has been in use now for four active years and has functioned well. this geometry allows gravity draing of the tank and is almost completely out of the way, leaving essentially full volume in the cockpit locker. Also, the access of the y valve from the head is a welcome feature.

still looking...

Thanks Terry, I'm on a lake with NO direct discharge allowed so the Y valve and gravity drain wouldn't help. I was hoping to hear from others that may have found a solution with a larger tank than 13 gallons.... Rich B

Limited space

If you are going to use the same area to house the new holding tank, you are limited by the size opening of the cockpit locker. I suppose that if you convert the storage area under the starboard settee in the cabin, you could use quite a large tank. I converted the bladder to a 12 gallon tank on my former H33 and it worked quite well, but sure made it difficult to work on that side of the engine or stuffing box.

Rich, we need to find tbest location for the tank

Not just any space that has room for it, but the right location relative to the distance from the toilet, venting, and pumpout for a tank big enough to do you any good in "no discharge" waters. Where is the head located in your boat...forward just behind the v-berth, or aft in the cabin? We can move this to email to work out the specifics, then report the outcome here...my email address is in all the directories. And...the link below should also be useful to you...

Thanks Peggie

http://www.sailboatowners.com/boats/photo.tpl?wc=33_77-83&site=Hunter&pno=333&brand=Hunter&display=33_77-83&fno=0 There's the plan layout for the '79 Hunter 33, the head is just adjacent to the companionway steps on the starboard side, towards the aft of the boat. The current bladder is dead center under the cckpit sittin on a shelf. I don't want to convert the interior settee storage space to a holding tank, I'm using that space..... Ken, was that the largest size tank you were able to fit through the locker?? (Peggie, just got your book in the mail and I'm LOVING it!!)

question Ken

ken, I've been re-reading your photo forum entry a couple times and I'm getting more interested in your approach..... Is there anything you would change looking back?? Where was the bladder pump mounted that you reference with the original bladder, is that the hand pump mounted on the bulkhead in the starboard cockpit locker? Mine isn''t hooked up to anything, I assumed that was an unused hand cranked bilge pump LOL.....
