Interested to know if anyone can provide performance comparison between vertical battened and non battened furling main for 2004 Hunter 33. Also my non battened main constantly flaps despite increasing leach line tension and using mast mounted winch to apply extra luff tension. Helps to a degree but unsure if doing the sale or furling mechanism any favours. Appreciate thoughts.

Better

I have a 2007 H-36 and thinking I should have ordered the verticalo battens,I was told some one down in Miami who switched to a new sail with vertical battens and said it was fantastic and fasterer and better sailing performance, the Vertical batten sail is also larger too.

Ibd, I owned a 2009 H33 with vertical battens and now have a 2006 H41 without. I really have not experienced the "flapping" you mentioned but I can say that the sail seemed to hold its shape better on the 33 with the battens. Whether it improves performance I cannot say, nor compare, since this 41 is like sailing a race car compared to the 33. But I think with the better shape it should.

I replaced my main with a Doyle zenith sail that has 3 vertical battens, the sail is almost as big as a conventional sail. The battens do reduce flapping of the leach and gives me a little more speed and is better in light air.
The down side is I have had several jam ups with this sail no matter how careful I am putting it away. It tends to bunch up and jams in the slot when I unfurl it, I think the mast bend has something to do with that, I also think Seldon could make that slot a little bigger. So far I've been able to unjam it myself by furling and unfurling till it's free. I spend at least an hour on it each time. One time I was by myself ( thank god for auto pilot) and it jammed two thirds of the way out and I couldn't move it in or out it was blowing about 15 knots, so I pointed it into the wind and set the auto pilot I was then able to drop the entire sail onto the deck and into the cabin and then went back to the dock and started all over, that was not a fun day. Ask me if I would buy the sail again, I probaly would because of the better performance.

I replaced my non-battened sail in March 2011 with a 4 vertical battens. Its a larger sail, holds its shape, i.e., no flapping, faster and looks great. Please be careful furling it in and out to avoid getting an upper batten stuck in the mast sleeve. Need to be heading into the wind or slight starboard tack with main and vang off and tension on the furl-in line when furling it out and on the outhaul when furling it in.
