HI Guys,

My hardware and general upgrade program is continuing. I am planning to add a solar ventilator to my 1989 Hunter 33.5. The location is going to be between the center skylight and the spray hood on the cabin top. Trying to decide if I should put in on center or off to one side on the non-skid. My question is what am I going to find when I bore the hole through? How is the cabin top made? What are the layers?

I also have signs of some delamination in the area and I am trying to kill two birds with one stone. Install the vent and check or repair the dull thud on the sounding in this area.

Any thoughts would be great.
Thank you,
Paul

On our 1990 H-33.5, I have installed a Nicro Solar/Battery powered 4" Vent. I installed it in the center of the Vee Berth hatch. I set it up as an exhaust vent. To allow air input, I insataaed an 2" x 18" (both approximate Dims.) in the top most pinboard at the companionway. It draws fresh air in there and exhausts it out the Vee Berth hatch. We have been very satisfied with it. We have had it for 12 years in May-13. I would be reluctant to install one in the decking.

Our solar vent is installed above the head. We have a split head set-up. The vanity is outside the head area. When installed in this area it serves double duty if you know what I mean.

Paul:

I would suggest that you consider installing the solar vent in a hatch vs boring through the deck. Depending on where you decide to cut the hole you could be into some electrical (who knows).

If you screw up a hatch you can just replace the acrylic.

I would look at the delamination as a seperate project.

If you do cut thru the Hatch, you want to use a hole saw and run it at slow speed and without a lot of downward pressure. If you use too high a speed it can cause some melting - not good. And too much downward pressure will cause it to gauge. You want a smooth cut hole. Then place the vent in place and use it as a template to drill the mounting holes. I think I remember a 4" hole saw, but the vent install sheet will tell what size the hole should be.
