Hello,
I have a sailboat Hunter 326 with a Yanmar 2GM20F. The actual propeller is a 2 blades 15x10 RH and I would like to change for a 3 blades to go a bit faster without damage for the motor. What Do you suggest?
Thank you to answer me.

I would suggest contacting Getaprop.com in Anacortes, WA. They have been very helpful and very responsive. They also carry most of the major propellers, fixed, folding and feathering..

The orginal 326 came with a two bladed prop. I suggested a 3 blade prop as a dealer who introduced this boat many years ago. Now retired but suggest going to the forum store as they can really help you. A former Hunter employee now owns this site. Good folks.

Could re-pitching the 2-blade prop work? Might be more bang for the buck.
I'm pretty pleased with my twin blade folding Gori.

I went to the forum store and they suggest a 15x 9, 3 blades to replace my 15x10, 2 blades. The problem still because I want to go a bit faster without damage on my Yanmar 2GM20F. The only thing I will get with the propeller 15x 9, 3 blades is more maneuverability!

Are you already hitting hull speed? Increased maneuverability may be all you can get. Or maybe more grunt against the current. Not the same as more speed.

Hull speed is 6.8knots, with the actual propeller (15x 10, 2 blades) it's 6 knts at 3000 rpm. Max. RPM is 3600 .

I would suggest you also reach out to WestbyNorth ( West By North ). Located near Comox BC.

They manufacture the CampbellSailor prop. I am happy with the results after installing one on my boat. They will discuss options and suggest the best match to your goal.

Top rpm is 3600, and hull speed is 6.8 kn. Cruising speed is something you want around 80% of max rpm. Before doing anything, I would try the boat on a calm day for a run with the current and same distance against the current at top speed. Then average both runs to see what you real top speed is. In your case, 2880 rpm would be about 80%. So your 3000 rpm is close enough. And therefore 6 knots sounds about right ! As a very general rule the maximum speed of any displacement hull--commonly called its hull speed--is governed by a simple formula: hull speed in knots equals 1.34 times the square root of the waterline length in feet (HS = 1.34 x √LWL). .... Do the maths with your LWL and compare with the results of the test mentioned above. As an example, my 34 with a 3GM30F engine has a top rpm of 3400. Hull speed tested at max was 7.1 knots. Coincidentally, the calculation with the LWL also give me 7.1 ! 80% of 3400 is 2720. I cruise at roughly 2650 and get 6.3 to 6.5 knots depending on conditions. I run a 3 blade 15 X 11 RH. I used to run a 15 X 15 2-blade. Went to the 3-blade to get more punch in heavy seas and increased maneuverability. Speed remained the same. Don't forget it is a displacement hull and you can play all you want with the prop, physics will not change and hull speed will remain pretty much in the same range. I did notice a small drop in speed under sail in light air. Now if you really want higher speed, do find a way to increase your water length...

Like Claude says, if you are looking for speed, a 3 blade is not the answer and understand it will add increased drag under sail. The 2GM20F is nothing more than an auxiliary engine which will barely give you 5 knots on the 326. Try motor sailing .

Your motor won't have enough power/torque to drive the boat at the same speed at a lower engine rpm. I don't believe you will achieve anything other than experience and less money in your wallet by fitting another prop'.
