Considering purchase of 2001 Hunter 320, have a couple concerns:(1) off wind performance given the position of the sweptback spreadersand (2) generalperformancein light air.I would appreicate any feed back. Thank you.

310 performance

I have a 1999 H310 which for, aside of some very small changes, is the same boat as the 320. 1.) Offwind; I have a asym spinnaker that I use in in light air under 10kts. I have to sail a little off from a ture down wind run. The boat flys !!! When I get lazy and or short handed, I run at wing on wing. It works well and in 10kts. of wind, I see 4-5+ kts. in speed. 2.)Light air performance, See above; Spinnaker up to 10kts. running or reaching. Or, let it all out. With 545 sq. ft. of sail area, you will move at a good speed. As far as higher winds, 1st. reef in at 15kts. and the boat flys!!!!! I have seen up to 8.4 kts in speed on both GPS's and my knot meter on a broad reach, which is the boats best point of sail. There is a H310 owner on Lake Peppen which should be in your area, you can find him through this site. Just do a search for 310 owners. He should be able to answer a lot of your questions. I sail on Lake Winnebago, I assume you will sail Lake Peppen or Lake Superior. You'll love the boat. If you can swing it, get the spinnaker package and the autopilot. Let me know if I can help with any questions. Goog luck. Steve, s/v The Odyssey (H310)

If your looking for a racing boat....

this isn't it. That said, with a nice 10-15k breeze there aren't many cruising boats in my neck of the woods that can beat me to a windward mark. No way to compete with the J-boats, but for a cruising boat it's a flyer with the proper trim. Downwind is not it's strong point but could be improved with an asym if you were so inclined. Light air performance windward is good, but downwind it's a dog (without a spinaker) so the best tactic is to tack. w

320 factory talk

I recently purchased a 320. You have the same questions I had. The sales people stated the boat would perform the best in heavier winds with factory equip. sails. Overall on wednesday night race it should out perform most other boats of the same class. A drifter or a 150-160 geni would help it point better and faster. I have not yet sailed my boat, but purchased it for the comfort, room ease of operation. Good Luck, Ed
