Hi all, I'm seeking advise on a Hunter Vision 32 I purchased back in December (my first sailboat). Last month she de-masted about 12' above the deck where a previous owner had made repairs after hurricane damage. New mast are no longer available and I have been unable to locate a used mast. If anyone knows of a salvage mast or even a lead on one that would be fantastic! Otherwise I'm looking for a shop to do a proper repair on a spun aluminum free standing mast? Advise?

Ouch - that hurts!

wish I could help ...

I've read that the original mast was made by a company that does traffic signal poles ....

If you do find a solution, please post your results! Good luck!

The mast on our HV'36 is sleeved so I don't see any reason why a shop couldn't do this for you.

You may want to do like Ron suggested and speak with a company that make light/signal poles. You next best bet would be a fabrication shop.

I know a fellow tha had a Freedom had to have a new mast made from carbon fiber, but they are not cheap.

What is your insurance company saying about the situation? I would pass the question on the repair back to them.

Some Suggestions

I assume you already did this, but if not, the place to start is with the PO. If you can contact them, they may be able to point you to whomever did the repair before. This failure should permit them to figure out how to do a better fix this time.

Otherwise, I would tend to look to a large airport and find out who does aircraft repair. They have a lot of experience with aluminum welding and fabrication. I suspect you don't need a new section as much as a repair where the sleeve section is. Hunter can probably point you to the mast manufacturer if a new mast is needed.

You have the unfortunate distinction of being the only mast damage I have ever heard of.

BTW, there was a Vision mast advertised in the classifieds on this site a couple of years ago. Probably salvaged from a hurricane damaged boat.

Best of luck and let us know how this works out. BTW, please post your area.

Can I suggest that you put a "Wanted" ad in the Gear Ads for that mast.

I had never heard of one being broken/damaged, but obviously it has happened. The ads are free and maybe the guy that needs to get rid of it will find the guy that needs it.

Best of luck.

Here's a link to a possible supplier.

Does anyone with a Hunter vision know the dimensions and wall thickness of the masts? I'm curious if they are just the standard flagpoles, which look tough enough, but these flagpoles may be too thick at the top. I've read some forums on other brands where the masts were pieced together with different aluminum sections.

From this discussion it seems the aluminum free-standing masts are pretty reliable. I've looked at some Hunter visions & they appear to be good deals, possibly because the masts are not as acceptable to most sailors, or just because they look "unusual". I would like to hear from some vision owners concerning the sailing performance & rig reliability.

Never heard of a mast failure. Show me a traditional rig that you can sail down wind in a 30kt+ wind without a reef?

A lot of the "deals" are for beaters.

Vision Mast

I actually spoke with the engineer who designed the masts, they are now Isomat on the east coast. Its a long story but having them rebuild a mast is too costly because of setting up the machining tools for one is mast. The option is a carbon fiber mast. Purchasing the mast isnt that expensive, having it shipped to you, set up, maybe a change in boom, etc is what costs. The price the engineer gave me was $15 to 20K. This guy actually tracks all mast failures made for the Hunter Vision Line both 32 and 36. I don't recall his name but he was friendly enough and I'm sure you can find him thru Isomast. Eddie Breeden at Hunter is the one how sent me down that pathway. Perhaps the mast from a parted out Vision like what Spurgeon Marine is offering is the best solution for you.

Good luck.

James

Jeff at Spurgeon can be trusted. His father was a dear friend of mine whom I bought trailers from which lasted for many years. Jeff I have known and I too trusted him.

Isomat. Use to be Kenyon Isomat then purchased by Z Spar in the 90's and that was a fiasco. Now it is Charleston Spar in Charlotte, NC and the fellow there is Jim Culibert and again he can be trusted for knowledge and he is a straight shooter.

If anyone is looking for a free standing aluminum spar get on the Nonsuch list and ask them. I think it was http://www.klackospars.com/ who made the Nonsuch aluminum spars...

Later models used carbon fiber but I recall Klacko in Canada was still able to produce spars as of a few years ago.

I do suspect the cost of a spar on a Vision 32 would "total" the boat insurance wise. A buddy lost his spar on an Ericson 34 (trucker snapped it) and IIRC it cost 30k +/- by the time he was done...

I know a raw carbon fiber pole for a Nonsuch runs about 20k for just the spar nothing else...
