Ahoy Mates,

I'm considering taking my 1999 Hunter 310 on a cruise across the Gulf of Mexico. I'm curious if there are recommended upgrades for such a trip. I did this voyage in my 1983 Catalina 27 some years ago, and found that there were many recommended upgrades for that boat: stronger spreaders and chain plates, larger diameter shrouds, etc.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks and Fair Winds,

The Pacific Cup Handbook

The Pacific Cup Handbook by Jim and Sue Corenman is a classic guide for preparing a boat for an offshore cruise. It does include specific advice on racing to Hawaii, but that advice is easily understood and put in its place. They used to carry it here, so I'd call the Chandlery on this site for help finding it.

However, it is not a specific set of recommendations about upgrades for your Hunter 310. It will be fun to see if someone comes up with one.

While the Hunter 310 is clearly designed as a coastal cruiser, a cruise across the Gulf is short enough to have a good weather picture for the whole crossing before departing, and a port of refuge is usually within 24 hours. So it's on the edge of "coastal."

Where are you planning to cruise (from; to)?
