did you have the trans in

reverse? Sometimes the shaft turning when in neutral will make a hum.

Reefing lines or Lazy Jacks?

Oscillating reefing lines or lazy jacks could cause a hum. Also shrouds may hum at certain frequencies.

Can you name that tune...

The vibration on my 310 would become audible at about 3.8 to 4.1 knots and was the result of the combination of a roller furling main mast and shroud tension. The vibration was initially most pronounced on a starboard tack and was reduced by increasing the tension on the port shroud. This took several attempts during the intial sea trials to get the shroud tensions setup. I don't profess to understand the mechanics of what was causing the vibration but I was concerned that uncorrected it would most likely cause a premature failure of the rig. Vibration in any mechanical system usually is not a good thing especially when it reaches audio frequencies.
