My ice box is supposed to be 4.5 cu ft. with 2" of insulation. What compressor and evaporator do you recommend? Mike

What can you afford?

Mike: There is not a lot you can do about the insulation. The hull side, stove/oven side and the front side of the box cannot have any more insulation added. The only practical thing you can do on the H'31 is to add some insulation in the PIT area. Now depending on what you want to spend will determine what unit you are going to be able to evaluate. The most popular unit is the AB units. They are reasonably priced and see to do a decent job. There are also the thermo electric type units. Once you decide on the type of unit, you need to consider how often you want to charge your batteries. You may want to have a secondary housekeeping bank for just the refrigeration 1 or 2 group 27/31 etc. Some of the more expensive units are 'suppose' to be more energy efficient. I suggest you find something that interests you and then repost your question.

Thanks Steve, I am looking at the AB 50 and 80 series. There seems to be little difference in price or efficiency of the two. I am probably going to go with the 80 series with the oval evaporator. Just wanting to get some other opinions Mike

A/B Frostmate

On my former H31, I installed what AB then called the Frostmate. It was a few hundred $$ less expensive and worked really well in my boat. This is the one with a "L" shaped evaporator. It does not have the freezer box, but I wasn't too interested in that feature on my 31. I mounted the compressor between the ice box and the big aft lazerette. Real easy to hookup, etc. BTW, on my current 37.5 I have the larger AB unit with the box type evaporator. It workes well, but not really sufficient to keep meats, etc., for a long time - at least so far. I just replaced my unit and am still figuring out how to live with it. Depending on whether you want/need the freezer box, the Frostmate was a great little unit.

I talked to AB about making the refrig into a freezer. They have a special thermostat that you can buy or they said to put a piece of plastic (like a credit card) behind the sensing unit. I plan on trying this next weekend.

Product Selection

The unit I would use is the CU-100 ColdMachine condensing unit with the VD-150 evaporator. These items are available from your favorite catalog company or local refrigeration dealer.

Grunert Unit in H31

Hi, We installed a Grunert Air/Water cooled refrigeration unit in Endless Summer's ice box and it has worked great for about 5 years. We mounted a horizontal evaporator (freezer box) in the ceiling of the refrigerator and made the door open downward instead of upward. Gives us great access to both the freezer and he refrigerator. You could do the same thing with an AB. We mounted the compressor in the lazarette and hung it from the plywood lazarette ceiling aft of the exhaust hoses. The thing transmits absolutely NO noise into the boat. Let me know if you want more details. remummah@worldnet.att.net Roger Mummah s/v Endless Summer 1983 H31 #58
