HUNTER 31 LONG BEACH
I recently purchased a 1986 Hunter 31. The way the ruuning rigging is set up does not seem correct. Can I get some input from owners of this model of boat to let me know how their boat is rigged. I have two double organizers and two double rope clutches port and starboard. I have the jib halyard and the mainsheet to port and the main halyard to starboard. The second slot on the starboard side is empty. I have the topping lift, reef line and outhaul simply hanging from the boom at the mast. There is no winch or cleat on the mast. Any input is appreciated.

If it was rigged like my H34 originally, the port side has the jib halyard and boom vang. Starboard has the main halyard and mainsheet. The outhaul and (in my case) two reef lines are as you have, and no a winch is not included or really needed. If you raise the topping lift then it is easy to pull the aft end of the sail down to the boom without a mechanical assist. The adjustable topping lift is just a block or two attached to the fixed length of lifeline extending from a couple of feet above the boom to the masthead. I have a clam cleat on the end of my boom so I can raise or lower it a couple of feet and cleat the line on the end of the boom.

The OEM equipment may have been one cabintop winch with both the main and Genoa halyards run thru one starboard side double line organizer.
Each dealer can also add equipment and set up the boat per the original owner's requirements.

I replaced the one double line organizer with a pair of tripple line organizers on our 28.5, and replaced the single speed cabintop winch with a pair of Harken self tailing winches. I run two Genoa halyards, the main halyard, plus a first and second reef thru the cabintop line organizers, and sheet stoppers to port and starboard cabintop winches. You should set up the halyards and reef lines for the way you will race or cruise the boat. I prefer to have the six part boom vang loose on the cabin top so I can operate it from anywhere in the cockpit.

That is the way it was rigged from the factory. Nothing is out of the ordinary. You have a spare rope clutch to rig something else. Or when you replace your main halyard, keep your old as a spare or for other purposes, such as lifting a dinghy or, if it's in good shape, going aloft.

My main, gen and spinnaker halyards, 2 reef, outhaul, downhaul, boom vang and traveler lines (through grommets in the dodger) and main sheet go through blocks at the mast then back to the cockpit through rope clutches or cam cleats. Very clean and requires no one outside of the cockpit, except when releasing and dousing the asymmetrical spinnaker or rigging up the boom preventer through blocks on the rail at the spreader on downwind legs.
