I am looking at 2 Hunters both are 1985's. One is a 31 Hunter the other 34 Hunter. Both are priced about the same and equipped about the same. Does anyone have a preference over one or the other?

I will be using it in the gulf with 2 to 4 people on board.

Thank You

Go bigger! It eliminates the symptoms of BBF for a longer period of time.

I had a H'31. Loved the boat. Just got a HV'36 and wished I had done it 5 years previous. The bigger boat makes life just a little easier and when things get rough they are easier to deal with (in my opinion).

Both boats have similar issues. The 34 has a larger engine which is also a big plus if you are dealing with winds/tide/current.

I am a complete newby to sailing and have the 31. I took a look at the Hunter website and did not see a 34, only the 33.5. It looks like the extra couple of feet are put into the head and V berth area, which is exactly where I would want it to go. I do agree with Steve that the 31 with it's very wide beam is about all the 2GM can handle and the 3GM in a boat only slightly larger should be immediately noticeable. And yes, you will suffer from 5-foot-itis relatively quickly, especially if you plan on doing much sailing with 4 people.

Bigger is better. Both are fine boats, but when we had to make the same choice back in the day, we liked the layout of the H34 more. As I recall, the aft berth area didn't really close off from the salon. The H34 has a bifold door. For us its not so much a privacy issue as much as I don't have to look at all the stuff we have crammed back there. The head area is larger, which is nice. I think the H31 has the holding tank under the v-berth. That never sounded optimal to me...maybe the H31 owners didn't have an issue with it. We changed our holding tank to an ElectroScan anyway and couldn't be happier. The H34 has a nice double sink in the galley. I don't know the comparison with the iceboxes, just that we can get 60 lbs of block ice, 5 lbs of dry ice and 5-6 bags of cubes in ours plus a week of food and it still has ice left at the end. Also, more opening hatches on deck makes it cooler in the summer. The hatch over the head area is good...the solar shower hangs right over it, so its just like using the regular shower. We keep that hatch cracked open all year round and it keeps the inside of the boat well ventilated. If it rains, it just goes into the shower pan...easy to deal with, and no damage. The H34 anchor locker is molded inside to hold both a Danforth anchor and a Bruce plus the line and chain for each. Kind of nice. I don't know if the 31 was set up for two anchors. The 3 cylinder Yanmar is smoother running than the 2 cylinder version. I think the later versions (towards the end of the run) had 30 horsepower engines versus the 22 horsepower that my '85 has. Tankages are correspondingly bigger which is convienient.

All else being equal, go for the H34. I've got a 326 and is looking at H36 now. But of course I couldn't afford it, but I can dream. :)

Sounds like everyone likes the 34 over the 31. That kind of makes it a easy pick.
Thanks for your help.

Rick...

just about all of us with H34's love the boat. And, about all the problems are well known and have been fixed by one of us at one time or another. Plenty of support for the H34 on this forum. Find a good one and have it fully surveyed for piece of mind.
