Can any mid 80's owners or former owners of Hunter 31 explain the rationale behind the strange lower luff/line/slug attachment system on the OEM mainsails. What is different if you get a new main with the usual slug attachment instead?
Thanks,
Dennis

The "jack line" allows the sail to be reefed/lowered without opening the mast track gate . Without the jack line, the luff can't be lowered enough. The lower few slugs stay in the track instead of having to be removed and re-loaded every time the sail is lowered..

Thanks kloudie1,
I kinda suspected that but mine is set up a little funky and I wanted confirmation before I tidied it up.

My Mark 25 was set up like that and I never got it. Although it looked sloppy, that boat had a very large main and once you opened the gate it could get ugly.

Yeah those slugs will come down a lot faster than they go up.
