I just bought a Hunter 31 (1984). My son took the boat to clean out the head tank and couldn't find the cleanout. I assumed it was on the starboard side, about midship, as was my Catalina. Can anyone tell me where the cleanout is ? Thanks,

Overboard or pump out?

Terry: The pump out outlet is on the starboard deck just forward of the port in the head. It usually has a BLACK cap, but that is where it is located anyway. If you are trying to pump overboard, you need to open the thru hull and possibly a "Y" valve. The fuel fill is also on the starboard side near the stern. The water filler on the later models was under the teak step near the swim ladder. That is also where the emergency tiller steering is inserted.

First, find the tank...

Then follow the hoses that are connected to it to their ultimate destinations. There should be 1.5" ID hose at or on the top of the tank coming from the head...another 1.5" hose coming out of the tank at the bottom that goes up to the pumpout fitting on deck (which is the one you're looking for)...and a smaller diameter hose (which is the vent) coming off the top that may also go to the deck or exit the hull just below the toe rail. On a Hunter, it will not end in a rail stanchion as it does on a Catalina. That's what SHOULD be there. 1984 was right on the "cusp" when it came to factory installed holding tanks...some boats had 'em, a lot didn't...tanks were added later by owners as states passed laws requiring 'em, and some owners resisted putting new holes in their boats for things like deck fittings and vent thru-hulls...so they didn't. They made it necessary to pump out the tank by opening a cleanout on the top of the tank and sticking the dockside pumpout down a hatch into the tank (which is a VERY bad idea because pumpouts have a nasty tendency to "burp" and spit up...something you DON'T want to happen anywhere INside your boat!). So the only way to find out how YOUR head and holding tank are installed, and where all the parts are, is to trace all the plumbing to see where it goes. You might also want to spend some time browsing the articles in the Head Mistress forum reference library (on the forum homepage) to learn how to maintain your system and keep your boat odor-free.

Pumpout

Steve, I know how to do the overboard valve. It was the deckside pumpout I was referring to. Thanks for the answer. I'm sure that's where it is. I'm just curious as to what my son was trying to pumpout. He said he opened a pumpout fitting on the starboard side but the pump wouldn't bring anything up. We know it's not empty. Isn't the fresh water fitting on the port side ? Terry

Under the swim step!

Terry: Our fresh water fill is under the step where the emergency tiller attaches. Some of the earlier boats put them in the PIT (the starboard lazarette). http://www.sailboatowners.com/upload/pix.tpl?folder=Dion73099931107

I wonder......

Terry: I wonder if the reason your son could not pump out the holding tank was because of the the 'Y' valve? You might try changing the position of the valve and try it again.

Thanks again, Steve

A picture is worth a thousand words. Looks like the same cockpit. Is your boat a 1984 ? Could you provide me with your email address? I have a few other questions I would like to ask someone familiar with the boat. Such as "Are you pleased with your Hunter?" We sailed her from Marina Del REy to San Diego last week...she's fast and smooth. Having a few odor problems, though. tgoodin@home.com Thanks
