Help! - I just bought a 31 hunter '85 , the thru hull for the galley sink is frozen shut. I can't understand how it would drain given that it goes thru the bottom of the boat, almost on center. I'm thinking of rerouting it, any comments or thoughts?
If the thru-hull is frozen shut that means it's likely corroded inside. That means there is a danger that it could fail and flood the boat. I think you need to fix the problem by replacing the thruhull, not bypassing it. Once you have an operating thruhull the sink will drain just fine as the water in the drain will go down to the level of the water outside the boat and your sink should be above that.
First determine what type it is. Gate valve or ball type. If it is a gate valve (home type) then wait till your next haul out to replace. Keep a wooden plug handy. If it is a ball type disconnect the hose and work some lubricant in it until you may get the valve to work. The sink will drain fine to the waterline and as the boat moves through the water syphon action will empty it totally. You may reroute the hose to a through the haul above the water line but the residue will stain the hull and when heeling on the tack you may get some water up on the sink. Needless to repeat, if you have a badly corroded through the hull or valve you should replace it. (boat out of the water unless you have a couple of friends and a diver in the water)
No problem draining. We had our '85 H'31 for 19 years and there is no problem. Just be sure to replace the valve with a ball valve or seacock. There is no need to reroute it. Besides, where would you re-route it to?
