I know that many of you have had the mast compression post problem. But i am considering buying a 1985 hunter 31 that has the problem and fixing it myself. The overhead is deformed. The structural beam does not appear crushed. The teak on the post is bowed (compressed too much). Where can i get the original dimensions for the compression post? How difficult is it to de-step and re-step the mast. Also water is leaking in and running out the port and stbd halogen light locations at the base of the overhead beam, i assume this is from the base of the mast leaking. Any inputs would be greatly appreciated.

It's Nothing MONEY Won't Fix!

That boat has a heavy rig and you are not going to get that mast down without a serious crane

Are you sure the post is crushed?

The photo looks like the area south of the post has fallen. The post may be holding everything up! Wet core?

not sure

The teak trim around the post is buckled out as if compressed, see picture. I am not sure what is causing the bugle in the overhead I assume it is the steel plate that is molded inside the upper deck pushing down with the rest of the mast.

Don't worry

Don't worry Jim! I had the same problem about one year and a half ago. Here in Venezuela,It's very difficult to find a professional ship yard to make that kind of repairments, so what I did was I unstepped the mast using the halyards from the sailboats besides mine. (so, I didn't have to pay for that) Then, I removed the compressor post and I bought a $50 solid saman post(a very strong wood post about 4 inches width x 7 inches length) I removed the damaged fiber glass under the deck, put some epoxy recine between the post and the ceiling of the cabin. I covered the hole for the wires with 5200 silicon and stepped the mast again following the same procedure with the halyards. I made a small hole in the mast base to pass the wires for the masthead light, the coax cable, etc, I made another two holes on the deck about 9 inches in front of the mast and with a couple of waterproof through-Deck fittings that I bought at West Marine, I brought all the wires to the bathroom ceiling where I can regularly check if I have some water leak. I didn't spend more than $250 and I forgot to mention that a carpenter made a good make up for the top of the new compressor post. I have some pictures I can send to you if you want. Good luck and sorry for my English. ilianaru@hotmail.com
