Hi, I am in the process of buying a 2002 Hunter 306, and just received the Marine survey report. The surveyor tells me the: "Engine exhaust elbow between the manifold and water injection point on the cast iron elbow- insulate with fiberglass cloth and wire retain to elbow-NFPA/ABYC recommendation" I informed the Hunter dealer of this and they told me no Hunter boats have this installed. Has anyone done this? Greg

Never heard of such a thing.

I have never heard of such a thing on the mixing elbow. The old boat with a riser to prevent water from back flushing into the engine had asbestos wrapped around the exhaust to prevent excess heat from from escaping and buring anything were much different (check out an Atomic 4). Sometimes I wonder about these surveyors. Are they lost in time, or do they just need to say something negative about the surveyed vessel so they think that they have earned their keep?

Stock elbow should not need this

I did this to my "Home Depot" special because it gets hotter than the Yanmar part.

Didn't have it

on my 2000 290 or the new 33. That 306 is a nice boat - you're gonna like it. Gregg (KE2SX)

ABYC

No insulation installed there from Hunter on my 2004 306 though. My understanding is builders are not required to build to ABYC standards though most seem to be going that way. Perhaps your surveyor has adopted the standard as a guide. People I've talked to tell me it's progress for the boat industry.

They lie

My H376 comes with it. It is one of three options for my engine, but the only one with a 2 inch output (others are 3 inches).

Thanks

Thanks for all those that replied. Hopefully I will be able to close next week, and finally be in the water for 45 days before it comes out again for the winter.... Greg

Clean The elbo

I clean my 2001 290 elbo every year with a sharp ice pick type of tool and so it comes apart very easy and this way it stays pretty clear and haven't had to replace it yet,and the engine always runs great. nick
