We are looking at a 1989 Hunter 30. It is through a broker and the price is $31,000.

It is in excellent condition, has all records and has been well maintained.

Can't find many used Hunters so not sure if this is a good price or not. There is another in similar condition for $27,000 but we would have to have it shipped.

Any input would be appreciated.

Think that is very high price. I bought a 1988 Hunter 33.5 in '98 for about $31k. Was a basic boat in fair condition. Think you should negotiate very hard. A 30' Hunter of that vintage likely cost $30k new. Watch for hull blisters & compression post rotting if the compression post is not aluminum.

make him an offer of 22,500.00 on condition of a survey and see where it goes from there ....that's a 26 year old boat and it could need all new standing rigging and running rigging...and the electronics may be antiquated oh and split the survey with him and you choose the surveyor not him ...not even one he recommends ...if he accepts and your survey comes up with expensive stuff then negotiate on down to where you are comfortable with a fair deal and don't let him see the sign on your back that says kick me ;)

if he is hungry and the seller is you might get a lot lower price ...just think about what i have just said ...what ya got to loose ...there are a lot of boats out there so don't be disappointed if you can't get this one ...good luck and happy hunting

There is no way that we can tell you if the Hunter 30 you are looking at is priced fairly without knowing more about it. A $3000 difference in price is meaningless if for example the higher priced boat has a sail inventory in excellent condition as opposed to the lower priced boat with blown out sails. Price some new sails and you'll see how fast you can spend $3000. New hardware, rigging and electronics will make your head spin if you haven't been window shopping lately. And let's not forget about the overall condition of the boat and engine. It's difficult to compare apples to apples.

My 31' was $14k 3 years ago and had beautiful interior and no significant problems other than mixing elbow replacement and plumbing hoses. The tax man rates it at $11,500. Unless that boat is totally turnkey with an array of modern electronics and first rate interior, I'd have to say you can do much better.

I assume this is a salt water boat used about 8 months per year, if you're in Washington. 26 years old is really getting old for such a boat, requiring new standing rigging , electronics, and potential structural issues. Salt water eats metal. Hunters are good "Chevy" boats for weekend coastal cruising, but they were economically made, sometimes cutting corners.

What are other 31s going for in salt water? Try looking at asking prices on this site, sailboatlisting.com, or even Kelly blue book, which has a boat section. Remember, you can do a thousand things with your cash, but he can only sail his boat, and apparently he's tired of that. The ball is in your court.
