Hunter 290 Sail Cover Question

I purchased a 2000 model 290 and am busy bringing everything back to useable condition. I noticed that the main sail cover is made to stay attached to the boom while the main is up and that there are pockets for two long battens that parrallel the boom. I dont have the battens and I was wondering if anyone is familiar with them and could advise what I need. What material, shape etc. are the originals made from?

You have some sort of a "pack". They are called Stack Packs and several other names. The typically cost about $100/ft of boom length to purchase. I believe that you should be able to get the stay's from about any sail loft.

Nah!! Steve I don't think this is correct. Battens for sure but they don't cost anything near $100/ft. These battens are generally fiberglass and probably cost $25 or so each.

I was referring to the Stack Pack cost, not the actual cost of the battens. Some of the units I have seen actually used PVC pipe.

I would think that PVC pipe is much cheaper and easy to get that will fit in the pockets of the sail cover which will keep the cover open so the sail drops in .

Thanks All...I discovered I do need just 1/2" pvc pipe

greg, I too have pvc pipe for sailcover batten, however weather where I'm at makes sure the pvc pipe is soft and snakey. I replace them with extenable aluminium tube used for floor mop. Just buy 3-4 sets and remove and joint them with their twist-lock. Now my sailcover stay straight and firm. I tie the lazy jack to this aluminium tube to hold up the sailcover. Neat and sweet.
