Hunter 280 Chatfield Lake
Recently purchased a Hunter 280 from a private party in Birmingham, AL. After getting it to Colorado I found a crack in the wing keel near the keel/boat junction running 1' from aft forward. I am not sure if this can be attributed to loose keel bolts or cosmetic. Has anyone experienced this?

One way...

...to see if it isn't cosmetic is to pour water into the bilge and see if it runs out. Better to fix it now than find out the converse, ie. water flowing into the bilge from below.

I have a 1986 deep keel 28.5 and every 2nd or third year dress up the soft joint between the top of the cast iron keel and the fiberglass keel / keel sump which joins it to the hull itself. Take a razor blade scraper or razor knife and scrape the paint away from the joint. You should be able to see if the 'crack' is an opening up of the soft joint, or something else. Typically it's the joint and you can cut it out and clean it up with the razor knife and possibly a Dremmel Tool. Go slowly, clean out any loose material, and if your keel is cast iron, wire brush out the rust with the Dremmel and use metal primer on the exposed cast iron. Tighten the keel bolts and re-seal the joint with 5200; let it cure at least a week and follow up with your bottom painting.
