Does anybody know the purpose of the fiberglass shell over the wing keel on a Hunter 28.Is it cosmetic or is it of structural value.Mine is full of water and has a crack in it about 5 inches down from the hull to keel joint.

Wiggy, our H28 and P42 had a barrier...
coating installed by Hunter that covered almost the entire keel. I believe they did this to seal the keel stub joint and lead metal. I do not think it provides any structural support to the joint. Ask your local yard or surveyor friend for their opinion. Terry

It has both cosmetic and structural value. I talked to Hunter about it. I assume you boat is up North? The keel bolts leaked. The water in the keel trunk froze and creaked it. The same thing happen to me. There are many ways to fix it. The best being drop the keel, repair the trunk, and recaulk the bolts.
