Hunter 28 Holding Tank

Recently, my H28 aluminum holding tank began to leak. I read many interesting ways to fix it. Most included cutting a large hole in the aft berth bulkhead. I really did not want to do that, so I purchased a RH56 Ronco holding tank and installed it. It fits through the small lazarettes in the cockpit. It turned out to be too small, so I installed a second tank, connecting the vent to both tanks, the fill to the upper 1 1/2"starboard tank fitting and the drain to the lower 1 1/2" fittings on both tanks. I ended up with about the same capacity as the original tank. I will tell you the work area is very tight, but you can do it.

Not bad, but...

Connecting the vents is gonna lead to trouble...each tank needs to be vented separately.

However, it would have been a LOT easier, and end up costing you about the same, if you'd put the too-small tank on eBay or Craigs list, bought another larger tank, and done the necessary carpentry work to replace the aluminum tank (which, btw, cannot be successfully repaired). That would have required much simpler plumbing and a lot less of it!

H 28 Holding Tank

Thanks for the response. I did not choose to cut a hole in the aft bulkhead as this is a structural piece of the boat that really matters. I may, sometime in the future, install a separate vent and clean out for tank #2 but so far it is working very well.

Hey DS my holding tank is plastic, does that mean it is not the original? (1993 H28)
