Did anyone see my last post about the water heater on my 1987 Hunter 28.5? I have the pressure water working (pumps is noisy) but the heater does not work. Hot faucet has no pressure ... can't find switch on panel, heater ????

Mick: I assume what you are telling us is that you are getting NO water out of the hot water side of your faucets! If this is correct, then I must assume that there is NO water going into the tank. You need to verify that you have water going into the tank before you can get anything out. Please check to see if there is water going into your tank. Someone may have disconnect the tank because it was leaking. If you have inlet water check and see if water will come out the outlet side. If you have a Seaward heater (squareish) unit. There is a small metal box that protrudes from either the front or the back depending on the model. If you remove this box (think it has a screw) you will see a reset switch under the insulation (be careful the metal edges are VERY sharp). This switch is just for reseting the element. It does nothing to control water flow.

Water restriction somewhere

To hitch a ride on Steve's idea and push it one step further if it doesn't solve the problem, I would verify the hot water supply system by simply disconnecting both the inlet and outlet hoses at the tank and connecting them together. Turn the pressure switch (breaker) on and try the galley and head faucets (including shower) one at a time. You should be getting water everywhere. If you get water to the tank, and not out, then as Steve says the tank might have a leak, or you have a restriction from the tank to the hot water faucet you are trying. Note that if you had a leak at the tank or after, the pump would keep going. Good Luck

4 responses not counting these!!!

Mick, go back to your original post. I read it yesterday and had nothing to add to the 4 posts already there. Steve's sums it up pretty good. Make sure there is water going in first. Yes, there is a switch on the a/c side of power panel for dock power heating of the element. Yes, there is a reset. And yes, it should heat up out on the water from running your diesel for approx. 20-30 minutes.

Water Heater (5th response)

Mick, nothing more to add about checking the water pressure, just follow the suggestions, its not as complicated as it sounds. I can suggest a cure for the loud pump, Crusing World had a good suggestion a year or two back, you remount the pump backing plate on a pair of 7/8 or 1" hard pressure lines to absorb the vibration, it helps. tom 87' 28.5

Whether the water heater is on or not...

Has nothing to do with whether water flows out of it or not, only with whether the water is hot or cold. As far as water flow is concerned, a water heater is nothing more than a large bubble in a water hose...water comes in at the bottom of one side...fills up the tank...and when the water in the tank is high enough to flow out the outlet fitting at the top, water will come out when you turn on a faucet. When the water level drops below the top of the outlet fitting, the water pump comes on again to refill the tank. So if you're not getting ANY water--hot or cold--out of any of your hot water faucets, only a few things can be happening: 1. no water is going into the tank TO come out; 2. water IS going into the tank, but you're not leaving the pump on long enough to fill the tank; 3. Water is going into the tank, but none is coming out...or at least, none is reaching any faucets. Those are only possibilities. Find out whether there's any water in the hot water tank. Disconnect the outlet fitting at the top and stick your finger in it. If your finger gets wet, the tank is full of water...that means the problem is in the plumbing between the tank and the faucets. If that's the case, look for a kink or a leak in the hose coming out of the tank. Since no water will run out of ANY hot water faucet, the problem has to be between the tank and any branches coming off it. If it doesn't get wet, that means there's no water in the tank--or at least not enough to flow out the outlet...and that will tell you that the problem is in the plumbing feeding the tank. In that case, make sure there are no kinks or leaks in the hose coming off the water "main" from the pump to the hot water tank. Since you're getting plenty of cold water, any problem cannot be further back than where the line to the hot water tank splits off the "main." If you can't find any problem in the plumbing, turn off the water pump an disconnect the hose from the inlet fitting on the tank. Be prepared for a spill, 'cuz the tank MAY be half full. Check the end of the hose for any "mud" that may have built up in it to block it. Stick your finger in the tank to feel for any that may be built up in the tank, blocking the water flow. And oh, btw...make sure the breaker for the tank is off before you start doing any of this, and make sure the breaker for the water pump is off before you disconnect any hoses. If, after doing all that--AND making sure you leave the water pump on long enough to complete fill the hot water tank--you still can't get anywater out of the hot water faucets, I'm stumped.
