I have a 1985 28.5 that last season required a transmission rebuild. After serious work and serious money I still have a significant vibration / knock. Since the boat is on the hard I have inspected the cutlas bearing and have determined that it needs replacing. I use a dripless packing system and have read were others have had issues with this system, but I really like the dry bilge. I also have the original prop and am considering a replacement with a Perfect Pitch prop specifically designed for this model boat. Wondering if anyone has any experience - positive or negative - with Perfect Pitch props. Also if the dripless system is an issue is there a specific recommendation instead of the plastic packing nut arrangement that was standard?

The source of the conventional bronze gland (and cutlass bearing) I used was Pyacht. See link below or call them at 1-877-379-2248. They have everything. While I probably have the sizes I used somewhere, I think it really important for you to measure your shaft log and strut opening yourself. Hunter's have some variations here and there in their models and you don't want to be wrong about these sizes. I also think that any misalignment of your shaft could easily destroy a cutlass bearing long before it would normally wear out.

Thanks Warren

I'll check out these options. One more question, is everyone still using the stock prop or have you moved on to something more exotic? I just cruise so I'm not really interested in big money for a folding prop.

Prop

I'm still using the standard OEM 2-blade prop and think it does an adequate job. I am no longer a serious PHRF racer, however. My boat will cruise nicely at 6-7.5 kts under power without pushing the Yanmar too hard (and if the bottom is clean...), and will sail at the same speeds with a little breeze. While I think you could add perhaps a half knot or so with a Martec or similar prop, the question is whether it would be worth it to you.

here's my story...

everything was fine on my 1988 Hunter 28.5. But one christmas my wife bought me a PSS drip-less shaftseal. So I replaced the standard bronze stuffing box with the PSS unit and replaced the cutlass bearing at the same time. After launching the boat at certain RPMs, the shaft would make this clanging sound. I tried realigning the motor to no avail. I could control the sound by shifting the engine as it was running but, still I couldn't eliminate the sound at all RPMs. I replaced two motor mounts that didn't need replacing and installed a slightly larger diameter shaft log. Still the problem persisted. So I went back to the original stuffing box and all is fine. It seems that the small diesels, because the vibrate so much, need the tightness of the original bronze stuffing box as a pilot bearing to keep them from banging inside the shaft log. I did replace the flax with the dripless stuffing material.
