That depends upon how you want to rig...

it. Do you want to control the lift from the end of the boom, through a line stopper into the cockpit, or a cleat at the boom/mast joint? The minimum would be the length of your mast times three. That should get you from the end of the boom to the top of the mast and into the cockpit with some left over. Other 28.5 owners may have a more precise number for you. Terry

I have a 28.5

I recently replaced my topping lift with 70' of 7/16" line. Mine terminates at the mast base.

H28.5 Topping Lift

I replaced the topping lift on my 28.5 this spring using 70 ft of 3/8 inch slick double braid. My topping lift is rigged from the masthead to a cheek block at the end of the boom to a horn cleat on the forward end of the boom near the goose neck.

used a rigid boom vang

i used a rigid boom vang instead of topping lift. when not sailing, i attach the main halyard to outter end of boom

topping lift

I don't remember the length, but I changed to a 3/16" topping lift this year. Plenty big, and reduces a lot of weight and excess rope aloft.
