When running my 28.5ft Hunters 15hp Yanmar diesel I have smoke blowing back up through the cockpit scuppers.

I sometimes see a little when starting cold

With my H31 I will see some of the black smoke backup through the cockpit scuppers when I am starting the engine on a a really cold morning. I am betting your engine exhaust exits fairly close to the scupper drain. Of course I dont think you should get lots of black smoke all the time. Maybe when you start a cold engine or when you go full throttle.

Used to happen...

on my '87 model 28.5 when cold or had not been started in awhile. The smoke was coming from the exhaust under the transom and then back up the scupper drains. No big deal.

Is the problem...

... that you have "smoke" or where the "smoke" is going? You shouldn't have any smoke at all after the initial start and warmup of the engine. If you do, then something is wrong with the condition of your engine. If you really mean engine "fumes" are coming back at you when going downwind under power, there probably is not much you can do about that. As you know, the engine exhaust on the H28.5 is right next to the starboard scupper, yet I think the scupper exit is pretty close to or under water when the boat is underway. While I have smelled diesel fumes when going downwind under power now and then, I don't think they are coming up the cockpit scuppers, but rather just normal engine blowback from the exhaust.

Black smoke!

Your engine is suffering from overfueling. Fouled prop, bad fuel or dirty filters are causing the black smoke. These are the usual causes; if everything checks OK verify the timing on the fuel injection pump. No big deal that the smoke is coming back up through the scuppers.

Usual cause in my experience

is the d*mn exhaust elbow. Check the archives or make a Home Depot model like I did.
