Hi, I am looking to by the Hunter 28.5. But I think one what I am looking at has non standard mast with just one pair of spreaders instead of two pair. Was it two type of masts during production, or this model has custom mast? It is normal draft 5'2. Where I can by the standard mast? Eugene.

Not Standard

It is not standard but if it works why replace it? Probably not worth the money (big bucks). A single spreader is not unreasonable for this size boat but I would be concerned about the geometry. See if you can find out who did the rigging and talk to them. I would stay away from this boat unless there is some documentation about the new rig as to its stability etc. I certainly would ensure that the purchase price is less than a similar 28.5 to compensate for the differnent rig. Remember you may want to sell this boat someday. Good luck

I'd let someone else purchase this boat!

Eugene: I agree with Bill. You need to make a good deduction for the rig. I would compare the price of this boat to others and see if they are discounting the price for this or not. If you ever want to sell this boat to someone else that understands the advantages of this rig, they will be asking the same questions and will probably put this boat aside. I would speculate that the original rig had been destroyed and this was the 'CHEAP' way out. These boats are selling in the $16k-22k range. You can get a price on the original rig from Seco South or Rig-rite. My best guess is that you are looking at $7-10k complete.

Fully agree: stay away

Eugene, there are a good number of normally rigged 28.5 available. I owned a 1986 28.5 from 91 to 98. Standard B

Agree w/ all

I would only consider this boat at a substantial discount and fully surveyed as to the integrity of the obviously altered rigging. A new mast for my 33.5 from SECO was $6,000 delivered to MI, not counting stepping/rigging. The standard fin keel was 5'-2" draft

thank you all

There was misunderstanding. The seller pointed on top of the container, I understood on top of the mast storage. Finally when we get a leather and climbed on top of this container I saw the standard hunter 28.5 mast. In quite good condition. What a strange place to store the mast. I am surveying the boat tomorrow. And if structurally everything OK I will buy it. Eugene
