Hunter 28.5 Fuel tank & water-lift muffler box leak

All,
I have a 1985 Hunter 28.5 and have a little issue. The fuel tank and water-lift muffler box are side by side, and now the water-lift box is pushing water into the fuel tank. The fuel tank is very very clean, so is it at all possible to go cheap by re-sealing the seam between the fuel tank and the water-lift box with sealant from an auto store? Or do I just need to bite the pullet cut out the top of the fuel tank, seal the seam for the wate-lift box and spend the $150 for a new fuel tank.

Fuel tank fill?

I too have a 28.5 and I dont know if the water box/muffler actually shares a will with the fuel tank. Could it be that water in entering from another source, say your fuel tank fill connection? I have always thought the fill connection was in a bad location since it sits horrizontally on the main deck. Its possible for water to enter the tank from rain or washdown.

I would bite the chicken and move the fuel tank and install a new muffler.

Thanks all.. just for what it's worth yes my Hunter shares a wall with the water-lift box. They have since changed the design. I emptied the tank out and ran the diesel while watching, and that is exactly where the water is coming from. I guess, I'm in the market for a fuel tank.
