Hunter 28.5 at sea

Is the Hunter 28.5 suitable for ocean sailing. I want to take the boat from Havre DeGrace, Md to the Boston area. Is this a trip for a 28.5 sailboat? What route would you take, the C&D canal or down the bay and out?Bob Ference

Yes...Pick your windows and have fun....

Made a similar trip in a 30' (bought it at Havre de Grace' and made the trip to NY. Yours would take a little longer. Go through the C&D canal, stop at Cape May & other inlets on NJ. Go through NY harbor, up the East River to Long Island Sound. Lots of stops & anchorages on the Sound. Go through Cape Cod canal & up to Boston.. Plan your trip, paying attention to your weather windows and your TIDES and CURRENTS especially in the canals, the EAST RIVER (HELLGATE) and NJ inlets. I preferred to make the stops rather than one big trip.... It was an adventure rather than a schedule....

Easy trip in the right weather

Have made this round trip five times through the C&D canal. First stop was Engineers Cove in the C&D, then a LONG day to Cape May. Delaware Bay can get very bouncy, so pick your weather and watch the tide. Enter Cape May via the Cape May canal. Anchorage is either north or south of the Coast Guard station. Next stop is Atlantic City, then for me it was Mannesquan. If you take a hard left (south) at the first opportunity after entering, there is a free dock at the Shrimp Box Restaurant. (as long as you have dinner there--it's good!)Then on to Sandy Hook or right through to Port Washington on LI if the current is right at Hells Gate. After that there are plenty of anchorages on the LI or CT side. I prefer to go to Pt Jefferson (take a Left into Sand Hole Anchorage) then Stonington, (behind the Breakwater) then Cudyhunk. Plenty of water all the way. Just pick your weather and take your time. Great Trip--enjoy!

I second the Shrimp Box

Yes look for the commercial fishing boats if there in port. the Shrimp Box is opposite on that inlet.
