Hunter 27 surprise

I just bought a Hunter 27 2005. The boat has not been used much (50hrs on the motor !)

But about the motor what a surprise when i discover that my Yanmar was a GM20 series a motor that was build in 1992 (I think)

The Manual supplied is a YM series !!!

The motor look brand new, so I am sure this is the original
anybody has had that experience ? is it possible that Hunter used OLD motor series to save money perhaps ?

Don't get me wrong I love the boat but is in it ODD for a manufacturer to do that ?

You may want to email Hunter Marine with the vessels HIN. They can validate what was originally installed. It's not likely they would have kept a "92" Yanmar around in hopes of installing it in to a "05" boat.

Maybe the PO found another (older) boat that he liked but it needed an engine. It wouldn't be a stretch to think that he found a rebuilt GM series engine and decided to make an exchange before selling his boat to you so that he could put his new YM series engine in the boat he found.

I'm currently thinking about buying a new engine and rebuilding the old to put up for sale. I'd bet there are numerous rebuilt engines on the market.

I think a rebuild is likely. Hunter is all about just-in-time manufacturing, an engine from the 90's doesn't fit anything about their production process. You might also want to contact the PO and see what he has to say.

My 1985 Nassau has a Yanmar 3QM. Yanmar tells me they quit making that engine in 1980. The brochure for the boat lists the Qm, so it was the intended engine. Maybe you can locate a brochure for your boat. Who knows what builders run into. Perhaps Hunter had overordered the older engine and put the overstock into your boat.

... Presume that you have found/read the nameplate on the engine?

I mention because when I bought my boat, a 1980 Hunter 36, the PO had left on board a manual for the Yanmar GM series engines. Even the surveyor cited this model series when noting that engine ran fine, but would not achieve the 2GM20 specified rpm. "Probably over prop'd" he wrote. I kept the boat on the hard for a few months after the purchase before eventually getting to the engine items. I found that the diagrams in the GM manual just wouldn't quite match up (but were close) with my visual observations of the actual engine. The only way to view the engine nameplate was by inserting a digital camera in the gap between the engine and the side bulkhead. Took several tries to get the nameplate image into the camera squarely. Surprise! I had a 2QM20!

Anyway, just a suggestion to be sure that you have observed the nameplate before "for sure" knowing your engine model.

Re my post a few minutes ago. The Yanmar 2QM20 with its mated transmission is rated at 2650 rpm. Mine does 2625 full throttle according to the tach. Darn close. And the engine does run fine. Starts reliably. No noticeable smoke of any color. Makes the boat move. And the visual appearance from the outside is still a clean Yanmar gray. Looks fine for any age engine. Let alone one that has been on my boat since 1980.

Yanmar told me the 3QM is a 40,000 hour engine. I'll take that.

Maybe it had a one cylinder and a previous owner wanted more power?

I've been interesting in buying that 2YM15. When you say the "manual" ... what are you talking about? Is the manual part of the material that came with the boat when the PO originally bought it? Your boat is 2005 ... How do you know the engine is from 1992? The 2GM20Y was introduced in 2005 according to this source. http://www.boatpoint.com.au/print.aspx?TabID=804587&R=1960607&ModID=1612404

At some point in time recently, the 2YM15 was introduced (possibly AFTER 2005?). I wasn't able to find a reference when it was introduced. It appears that they modernized the 2GM20 and made it compliant with emissions standards. Mack Boring no longer offers 2GM20.

I think it is very odd that you were provided a "manual" referencing YM series (2YM15?) when you have a 2GM20 on the boat. Which model is it?. The letters following 2GM20 will tell if it is raw water (older?) or fresh-water cooled (they made it both ways). There were a number of changes they made over the years. The letters on the name plate will tell you specifically which model you have and may give you a clue when it was made.

If the boat really came with a FM series engine, it wouldn't surprise me if the PO didn't want the boat but wanted the new engine, and swapped it with a re-build. A rebuild will look brand new (and run brand new as well). If the re-build was done by an outfit such as Mack Boring, they replace the piston, re-bore the cylinder, replace all parts as necessary and re-paint the block. You wouldn't be able to tell it from brand new by just looking at it.
