It's official, the boat is mine. I went down today to collect the sails, cushions, batteries, and begin the work. First of all, the electrical system is a joke, everything non-Hunter has to go. The previous owner may have been an excellent aircraft mechanic, and maintained the engine perfectly, but he knew nothing about boat electrical. he has 2 batteries in there, a Die Hard sealed car battery (11.5v) and a "USED BATTERY" No kidding! look!

aaaHAHAHAHAHA! used battery. Gonna be used as a core for trade in along with the other one. This is where the batteries and charger were before I ripped everything out, this is under the chart table, in the 1981 and up models there is a seat here, I am going to convert this cabinet into a seat like this one here (2nd pic)...

1980

1981. This is not my boat, but one I tried to buy.

So I will be moving the batteries underneath the seat just behind the switch panels.

Here's everything I took home, 4 sails (1 good one) cushions, and my storage hatch board template

What is it with people and Home Depot hardware on boats? Unacceptable. This is the genoa clew. The genny is in pretty good shape, it's the only newer sail, rest are original. main and 2 hank on jibs, anyone want them?

I also shoveled off the boat and removed the boom so the yard can drop the mast in preparation for shipping

You are a lucky guy to be able to be messing around with your new boat. Some of us are stuck in several inches of snow. It isn't clear to me which pictures are your boat and the other boat. The two batteries in the bottom of the hanging locker, yours or the other? Where is that hanging locker on an H27? And you plan to have the batteries under the nav station? Surely there is a way to keep that space open for your feet.

I had to shovel a foot of snow off the boat to work on it :D The hanging locker is on my boat, it's in the same spot as the nav table on the other boat. The batteries right now are (or were before I got rid of them) where I want my feet to go. I want my boat to look like the other boat, I will be putting the batteries under the quarterberth where they were supposed to be in the first place.

Batteries

That's right, the battery(ies) go under the forward end of the quarter berth. Then the hanging locker with a stand-up (nav?!) table is between the quarter berth, and the port settee. Honestly, the best nav table on our '77 h27 is the starboard leaf of the drop-down cabin table. Good space on the table, good view out into the helm in the cockpit, and solid, secure seating.

But with a good hand-held GPS, most of the navigating has moved into the cockpit for us. I use the setup described above to plan a route, set up waypoints, etc. before getting under weigh.

But it is your boat, and your PO(s) have clearly taken some liberties, so enjoy yourself! Do get in some sailing time when you can, though.

Hanging locker?

Emkay & David,

So do you still have a hanging locker in the head? Our boat had a dorm fridge under the chart table (so the chart table is a great place to make a drink ) It doesn't look like it was the seat setup so I wonder if it was also a hanging locker.

Emkay,

What's the light switch for in the locker?

I had a similar horror show with the electric and the under Nav station storage locker. Ended up turning it into storage shelves and rewiring the rest of the boat. I also lowered the nav station top and hinged the section hanging over the rear berth. Now all the counter top heights are at the same level and with the lid folded down there's more room in the rear berth. Still have to add the new wall liner.

Yeah, there's a locker in the head, and the switch goes to the battery charger. There is another mystery switch in there that goes to the inverter. I think they all had that locker until '81 when they changed the interior design. Does yours have the wood companionway steps?

I like what you did there, good idea with lowering the height. I think it is higher than the later models with the nav station there.

companionway steps

Hi Emkay,

Yes, the steps are wood. I finally got around to refinishing them last winter. I've seen that some of the 27's had molded fiberglass? steps but I like the wood better.

Our Head

Our head, aft of the v-berth has a portapotty rigged for pump-out to starboard, and a sink to port.

David how's the portapotty rigged for pumpout? I have a cheap portapotty and I like it, I assume it has no intake right? Just keep the water tank full? Right now my boat has 2 thru hulls, one for the galley sink, and one for the engine (then the 2 transducers) and I'd like to keep it that way.

Portapotty piping

There is a large (1 1/2 to 2 inch) sanitary flex pipe connected to a fitting at the right rear of the potty tank. It the runs up to a standard pump out deck fitting straight above. In addition, there is a ventilation tube that provides some ventilation from a fitting below the toe rail on the side of the boat above the potty. According to the Head Mistress, it should be bigger, but it does provide oxygen to supplement the odorlos that oxzgenates the tank and keeps odor away. Of course, a portapotty gets a big dose of ozygen on every use.

Because the portapotty requires no (or little) flushing water, it can hold far more waste per gallon capacity than a holding tank that has waste plus flush water. With careful use, we went a 6 days on the holding tank of a 340 charter in the North Channel. We will plan 4 days between pump-outs on our portapotty system this summer.

Got to agree with David. After a season of sailing my H27, a handheld GPS (like the Colorado 400c) was on my Christmas list. When I'm at the tiller, my tail is usually plopped down on the port coaming, and I wouldn't want to keep going below to check out charts/electronic devices while I'm underway. My handheld GPS fits into my cargo pocket, and with the thumbwheel on the unit, I don't even have to lift my right hand from the tiller. Oh, almost forgot, that Nav station's counter top is pretty slick (which you will probably discover the first time you heel to starboard)...

I'm not actually going to use it for navigation, it's really just a spot to sit while at the dock, and a new home for all the electronics. I'll have a chart plotter and my iphone with inavx in the cockpit. The most I will have on the table is a laptop strapped to it for web surfing, and a nav app on it for planning.
