You should be able to get an aluminum plate cut to size from any metal fabricator. I have a guy here in Atlanta that makes any custom size aluminum or stainless pieces I have needed on any of my boats and or trailers.

As Jimbovvy says, an aluminum plate is easy to come by. I'd find a local fabricator, and then wait until I knew the size of plate I wanted before ordering it.

As an alternative to plywood, also consider IPE decking wood. The stuff is as hard as rock, extremely dense (won't compress under high weight loads), and ranks up there with teak as the most highly resistant to decay and rot. Higher grades of IPE is the stuff that originally airplane propellers were made of. Its widely available (at least here in California) most lumber stores. Most stores will let you buy (say) 4 feet off of a 12 foot piece, so that they can put the remainder in the 8 foot length bin.

This link gives info as to IPE's characteristics.

Manny, your second photo shows the "stringer that the post rests on settled a little"?

What am i looking for? Should there be a gap between the stringer and the deck?
i attached the photo in question with my comment to it. THANKS for responding.

I may have used the wrong choice of words. It is a little difficult to see in the picture but the upper vertical area of the stringer is bulging out slightly for pretty much the entire length. The other stringers that I can see do not have that bulge. As far as I am aware the fiberglass under the sole should be flush against the stringer, except for the raised area under the head. In mine part of that area is directly the stringer so there is a large gap.
Hope that helps.

Manny
