It is great to discover this forum. I just purchased (last night) an '82 Hunter 27 that has been sitting for several years; two years on the hard and, at least, one year at the dock before that. It seems not to have been used much although the bottom is being redone as it has some blisters, and the bottom paint is about gone. I need to restore, however, the companionway boards, and the side boards which the companionway boards slot into and would like to know if the side boards are readily available, or am I going to have to make them myself. If they are available, where is the best place to buy them. I also need to replace at least one of the bilge covers as there was apparently at some time standing water in the bilge to floor level and the plywood has separated. I could replace it with plywood, but would like to do something a little better aesthetcally.

Rich...give me your e-mail address

and I will show you some pictures and what you need to do the job very nicely yourself. I re-did mine and put in a grey lexan window for the two middle boards. dbusby@midsouth.rr.com

Another new owner

We just bought an '84, moving up from an O'Day 23'. We plan to replace the plywood bilge covers too. So any and all suggestions/experiences will be deeply appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Bilge Cover

I had a problem a few seasons ago with standing water during winter storage, which buckled the ribbed floor covering. So, I went to Home Depot and bought some nice beige outdoor rubber-backed carpeting. It looks great, is comfortable and masks an extremely ugly bilge cover. (I cut out around the bilge and then layed a runner over it, so I had easy access). Just another quick and cheap option for you.

Welcome

to the H27 world... Love my 84... A couple of bits of advice... 1. Keep her dry... you may have to invest in a turkey baster to get at all the nooks and cranies. Tighten the toe rail bolts... Check the bedding on your deck hardware... 2. Get comfortable with the archive search on this site... You will find information on hatches, ports, mast steps and everything you really don't want to get into. 3. You will probably want an owners manual... They are periodically posted, but the links that I have appear to be dead at this time... Do not dispair because I have the scaned copy (aledgely good for the H22-H37 of this vintage) that I can forward via email if you contact me via the owners directory for this site. (put something recognizable in the title of the note because I delete unexpected stuff immediately). 4. Go sailing... In fact, never take things so far apart that you can't put back together and go out. Again, welcome... Chuck Petty S/V Following Sea

How do I access the

I'm sure it's simple, but I cannot figure out where to go. I was trying to find Chuck Petty's name but unable. I would really appreciate a copy of the manual, which you could email me at rdwoodward@hotmail.com (which is the email address I use in public). Thanks

On the way

From the Hunter Owners home page (HOW as the "locals" here call it) click on the forum tab... Take it from there or sell your boat.... Likewise, to find an owner, click on the Owner Directory tab.... Be careful on this site, there are some crusty SOB's that will eat you alive if you don't check the archives first and if you missspelll a word or two. (just kidding, sort of). We all have opinions and some of them actually agree with mine. Rich, the manual is on the way... I hope you have a high speed connection... adendum... Rich, I got a mail failure from Hotmail when I tried to send it. Contact me via the owners directory with a phone number or alternative email or what ever Chuck Petty S/V Following Sea

One more suggestion

Get someone to check out the topsides with a moisture meter. This should not cost you much and it will show you problems that you would be able to see any other way. If you find a little moisture under a port or somewhere else fix it now before it gets worse. If you find all is dry then rebed stuff as you have the time and do other jobs you can see that need to be done. You got a great boat.

Another companionway suggestion

Sorry I don't have a photo handy - maybe I'll upload one soon to the photo forum, but I made a two-piece (upper and lower) companionway replacement from red oak and smoked plexiglass. I used my old washboards for an outline. I slotted the inside surfaces of new "boards" with a dado blade on my table saw to match the width of the plexi, inserted the plexi sheets, then glued lap joints at the corners of the oak pieces together. Eight coats of varnish and it looks good!

I am just beginning my 2nd season with

my '79 hunter 27'. We love it. I learned alot the first season. My companionway is made of smoked fiberglass. I sanded all of my ext. teak and used cetol....it looks great. I sanded all of the anti - skid and applied the white West anti-skid paint....it looks great. I recovered all of the interior cushions myself this winter using my grandmother's sewing machine. They don't look perfect...but do appear very clean, new and up to date. I pulled out the muffler which had a pinhole leak and repaired it with west system epoxy. Added a stern step make from mahogany to help board from the stern (we are on a mooring)...the Mrs. loves the extra step. Just bought a f6 cdi roller furling. Lots of fun with a very heavy stable boat. I love the cherubini as compared to the new versions. Good luck!

btw...I have all the manuals for the 79 cherubini

including a hunter manual which I downloaded right off this site...and the engine manual for sb8 yanmar

John, where?

I know the manuals were posted at one point in time. Can't find them now. Do you have a link? None of the owner's manual links that I have work now. My offer to email to any/all H27 owners stands until there is a valid link out there.

I just sent a 1980 Manual to your hotmail address. (If our system will let it through.)

Big Thanks!

for all your help and responses. This will be a rehab season for us but sailing for sure, as we go. We hope to build a website and become pro-active here at the forum. Thanks again! Deb P.

very simple

if you want to do the boat back stock; my 79 takes a long piece of mahogany plywood half inch. i believe your boat takes a teak and holly plywood. you can buy it at noah's 800 524 7517. my cabin parts seem to be 4 mahgony planks solid wood, 3 quarter with a groove cut with a table saw the retaining pieces are 1x2 teak with a matching groove cut with a table saw, held on with stainless hardware. you might want to knock the hard edges off the teak with a belt sander. if you want doors check out greg garners. he posted them a while back and he does good work.
