I just purchased a '84 Hunter 27. When the boat was derigged the mast wiring was cut at the mast step and the bolts that hold the step to the deck were removed. The question is how to I get at the underside of the mast step to replace the wiring and insure that the step in tightened properly. Is there normally a wire connector at the base of the mast to allow for removal without cutting the wiring. Granted I havent looked yet, so there may be one there.

Thanks for the help

There is generaly something

My Hunter 27 has enough slack to feed to a junction box at in the space behind the lav sink. Most likely a rewire job, but it works fine. I don't know why they would have unbolted the mast step. As you may know, the balsa core in this area doesnt want to get wet.

There should be connectors inside the mast

I rebuilt the deck around my mast step due to water intrusion and there were connectors inside the mast. Originally the wiring ran through the step, through the deck, down a channel in the compression post in the head, and through the bilge to the battery box. I ended up drilling a small hole on the side of the mast to let the wiring out through to a cable clam on the deck making the connections inside. Either way you will need to remove the compression post to bolt the step back in place.
