Hunter 27 Hatches

Hello:

I am new to sailing and have purchased a 1978 Hunter 27. It need a bit of work but nothing structural mostly cosmetic. It now however needs two new port holes and a new front deck hatch. Both are stamped with the name Gray Industries, Tampa Florida which I can not locate and am assuming that they are no longer in business. Any suggestions about a source for new hatches and port hole for my 1978 Hunter 27 and how do I measure to get the correct size? I am located in Belfast Maine.

GRAY ports and hatches are very much still available, and you can find them on this website in the PARTS column.

I believe they also offer units with minor defects at lower price. Sizes are listed. I replaced my port inserts 5 years ago with clear, wish I had gotten smoke version. Replacement screens and seal maerial also available on site. Foreward hatch is more of a problem. It is not rectangular, but more of a trapazoid. The original unit is nolonger available. Leaves you 2 choices: cut the deck to matach a new hatch or use a larger demention unit without the collar extending down into the opening. Good luck.

Gray Industries of Tampa is alive and well. They are now a Division of Pompanette, LLC who also lists Bomar. The trapezoidal hatch for the h27 is no longer available and most use the rectangular Bomar model 2092. Some fiberglass grinding is necessary to make it fit. There are flush mounted hatches that are available from other manufactureres and are easier to install but they are substantially more expensive than the Bomar. Go to the Boat Info section and go to the h27 page and click on Modifications and you will see a couple of installations.
