I have a 1982 27' hunter. The manual claims the fuel tank has 12 gal capacity. How can I tell how much fuel is in the tank?? I can't find any meters or alike. Thanks in advance, Oldgranpop, St. Pete., Fl.

H27

Our 1989 H28 did not have a fuel level gauge either. If you fill the tank you know how much is on hand. The alternative is to install a gauge, or an inspection port. I opted to do neither. I knew how much fuel the 2GM burned per hour and from there could get pretty close.

Tank Gauge

My 81 H27 also had the 12 gal tank. It was equipped with a mechanical type guage that could only be seen when you opened the lazerette and opend a small access door on the interior bulkhead. You had to lean way over into the lazerette and shine a flashlight into the space to see the guage. The tank fill was high on the coaming and the tank vent was lower than the fill which created great potential for fuel to be forced out the vent. It meant you were pumping or pouring slow and constantly checking and rechecking the hard to see tank mounted gauge. Be careful while fueling.

The best way

Install an hour meter and calculate your average burn rate (gallons per hour). The h27 Cherubini came with a 12 Gallon tank but remeber you should only consider 10 gallons to be usable. The boat will likely start sucking air before the tank is dry. The procedure is simple fill up the tank and log the hour reading at the meter. Whenever you want to know how much fuel you have left just look at the hours that have transpired since last fillup and multiply times the burn rate and you will know how many gallons have been used. Sbstract the number from 10 and you will know how many gallons are left. For example if your burn rate is 1/4 of gallon per hour and you have ran 12 hours since last fillup then you have used 3 gallons and will have 7 left. The math is simple and very reliable. Don't get confused with distance travelled, wind, currents and the condition of the hull as they have no bearing onthe burn rate which is only gallons/hour. I have used this method for years and can usually tell how much fuel I need to take on to within 1/10th of a gallon.

I must have an odd setup on my 1980 27, the fuel tank is squarely in the lazarette and has a mechanical gauge. It's no problem to see the amount of fuel (unless I pile my sail covers on top of it!). I'd have to check next time I'm down but I think my tank is 11 gallons...

In a Pinch

When I bought my 31 I needed to determine how much fuel the PO left me in the tank. I did not want to overfill the first time at the fuel dock. I removed the fill line where it attaches to the top of the tank. Using a clear plastic tube (longer than the depth of the tank) I placed in in the tank through the fill line opening until it hit the bottom of
the tank. Then placed my finger over the top of the tube creating a vacuum in the tube, slowly removing the tube you can clearly see the fuel left in the tube. mark the level of the fuel in the tube with your finger release the vacum by removing your finger from the top of the tube, then place the tube up against the tank and you can determine the level of fuel in the tank by the mark on the tube. After that be sure to replace the fill line and from that point keep track of your usage.

Re: The best way

Thanks!!! I was wondering what my usage rate would be. My old Hunter 27 had a French engine that burned about a qt an hour!! This is a Yamaha one cyl.

HI -I have a 81 h27. To check fuel, other than filling up and keeping track of running hrs, pull everything out of starboard lazerette, sit in it, remove small access door (size of shoebox) look at window with flashlight into tank.
