I just got an Raytheon 4000 autopilot and I am pondering if any other owner of a H-27 can tell me were the fluxgate compass is located on his boat. The instructions that come with the unit are the usual ivory tower engineers and you draw the conclusion the fluxgate must to be installed in the bottom of a rubber dingy being towed 20 feet away to avoid any kind of disturbance. (metal bodies, engine, bateries, radios, other compass, etc. etc.) Any information will help me not to reinvent the wheel... Thanks! Aldo S/V Isabel alozano@monmouth.com

Ivory Tower

Hello Aldo, I do own a H27 of '84 vintage and last year I did install the 4000. Your best alternative to the dinghy is the bulkhead forward of the port berth. Mine is there sharing space with the ships barometer. It works very well, being just far enough away from the mast and well away from the batteries. The system works very well, except the Hunter response is a litle slow, causing me to sway around the course line like a drunken sailor. I do not think any other location would give me any better response. Good luck, Hans.

Hans: Perhaps yo care in sharing a little more info about your installation? where did you installed the head? I am thinking of ordering one of those extra long and ofset Edson pedestal guards to mount the instrument housing, but I am not sure about the housing itself, because I plan to house a GPS also. Did you mind to do a couple of e-mails direct on that subject? Thanks for your sugestion about the fluxgate... Sound good to me, but, isn't there an adjustment for that drunken sailor routine? My Hunter is a 83. Any big difference with yours? Aldo alozano@monmouth.com
