Anybody have a Hunter 27 Edge? What was the fastest speed the Edge went UNDER SAIL? What conditions were associated with that highest speed? How fast did the boat normally sailed and which sails were up at those speeds? And one more thing, does the powerboat hull design interfere with the sailing performance or does the hull improve sailing speed and performance?

We're not experts by any means having only owned our 27 Edge for about 7 months. As new sailors we've been conservative about taking the boat out in heavier winds but we regularly see 5 or 6 knots in 8 to 10 knot winds with 1-2 ft. seas under both sails. We've thoroughly enjoyed the boat but I'll try to provide some observations from a novice's perspective:
1. The Edge can be a handful in the marina due to its generous freeboard and hull shape. Maintaining a full ballast tank and leaving the rudder and centerboard down when possible make her much more docile. Thanks to the 75 hp outboard she backs very smartly.
2. Speed: Hunter's advertised speed for this boat under power is obviously for a bare boat (no ballast) over calm water. With ballast, a couple of passengers and equipment for a weekend on the Chesapeake Bay we generally don't see much better than 12 knots unless the water's extraordinarily calm. The ETec 75 has been very fuel efficient.
3. Sail: the rig itself is very basic -- no traveler, no jib cars -- but it has been effective under the conditions we've encountered. The hull shape and water ballast makes the Edge a bit more tender than more traditional designs but once the sails are set and a heel established she's quite manageable in the right conditions. As I mentioned, we haven't braved winds over 15 knots yet but I suspect she might be a handful at much over that. We've been caught out in rain and choppy waters (3 ft. chop 12-15 knts) and quickly learned she's much happier with canvas up than under power in unsettled waters. With her limited deck space we would strongly recommend leading all lines to the cockpit and installing lazy jacks.
4. General: the cockpit is a good size for a couple. One could certainly get four adults in there but it would be tight. Inside the space is pretty generous for this size boat -- especially given the beam. Storage is limited but since it's just the two of us we use the v-berth for storage. We cut some new hatchboards to accommodate a 5000 BTU window air conditioner and have been very comfortable dockside even in 90 degree temps.

Introducing the Hunter Edge 27 at an in water show on the Pamlico Sound, NC and sailed under reefed main with the boom out in 20-25 knots of wind which I kept under control. Generally I obtained depending on the wind and sailing flatter than most sailboats, I got up to 6-8.5 knots comfortably.
As for speed under power only with the 75 hp at appx. 20-22 MPH which I cannot confirm, let me explain. I introduced the boat at the 2009 Annapolis Boat Show. With full ballast and only me in the boat when leaving the docks after the show in Annapolis Harbor which is a no wake zone of course, I was challenged by the competition to put the pedal to the metal. I throttled up from the docks of course I was creating so much wake coming out of the show at full throttle, I was rocking the boats, throwing water onto folks and of course the harbor patrol got water thrown into their boat and the boys got wet. Needless to say with Harbor Patrol, DNR and Coast Guard chasing me, I was stopped of course with Maryland DNR taking over chewing me out. I was told they estimated my speed at 20-22 mph. I used my technique of my North Carolina drawl and a crying routine and talked myself out of any tickets while all the time I really was just laughing so hard. After DNR left I motored so slightly so not to create any wake in the harbor anymore and went 1000 feet and stopped so I could bust out laughing. The calls came in on the cell phone and everyone was surprised no tickets. That was my last show and that stunt was the most memorable time I will never forget after 30 plus years. It was a great way to leave laughing and I could hear Annapolis cheering me on for that stunt.
