27 Hunter

Just bought a 1983 in March and have had a great time with it. The only complaint I have is the 1GM10 Yanmar;I think it under powers the boat at 8.5hp. But I don't have strong currents to battle so I'm getting used to it. I have some leaks around the windows and stantions but not bad. A good first boat to overnight and day sale.

Owners Review

Select "The Bosts" on the first page, then the 27_75-84 in the left column, and then Owner reviews. Mine is there, along with a number of very informative posts (including problems discovered after buying.) If you like the boat, the best advice is to get a good survey, and take it seriously. After 16 months with the Lady Lillie, we have had few problems that weren't identified in the survey. On the other hand no such process is 100%. David Lady Lillie '77 h27

If the boat fits

We have an 82 and, as with any boat, there are pros and cons Although it says 75-84 there are differences between, and perhaps within, model years. I believe the 80's had Renault engines. I talked to the previous owner of an 80 and he said the Renault performed well. This has been echoed by inhabitants of this forum. This partucular boat became a training boat and for good reason. This model is very good for new sailors. It forgives mistakes, something I can swear to, and it seems solid when you get into seas where you rather not be. The bad parts. If it ain't right for you, stay away. It is a good weekend boat and would probably go for a week (something my wife and I will try in September). Yet, this is an individual judgment, It is perhaps too small for you. It is 20 years plus old. Get a survey, of course, but also look at details (the surveyor may not), right down to the fittings of the faucets and the water hoses. Does it have ball valves or gate valves on the trough hulls? Has so much been added the wiring is a nightmare? How is the condition of the standing and running rigging (price 100 feet of any type of line). Is the head in good shape? There are hundred things that can cost you money. Get a supply catalog to see. A couple hundred here an couple hundred there and soon, real money. Can you do the work yourself. All this aside, do you really like the boat? If the structure is sound most everything else can be fixed. You must like it, as it may be a long term relationship. Andy s/v Baroque

I love my 1980 Hunter 27

I bought my 1980 Hunter 27 11 years ago. It's been a great boat. It has a Renault. Although the engine runs well, the tranny leaks oil. I can't get service on it around NW Michigan, and parts can be hard to find. I'm looking for a rebulilt Yanmar to replace the Renault. Anyone have suggestions?

I have a '78 27

I bought my '78 last December and love it. I have done many things to upgrade it and make it more comfortable. It has a Yanmar SB8 (single cylinder 8hp). It had been on the hard for a few years and after soem routine maint it fired right up. It is a little under powered but I am on a lake and currents are not an issue. Overall I would reccommend a Yanmar. From everything I have read about them, they are bullet proof. Good luck.

Have a 27 Myself

I bought mine about 3-4 years ago and have thoroughly enjoyed it. We are on the boat on Lake Erie every weekend from mid-April to early November! Had a good survey done and the things that were mentioned were the issues. Have done some upgrades like: all new head and plumbing; added microwave; added a gas grill; added a bimini; replaced the bilge pump and float; replaced the original VHF and added a handheld, too; now have a GPS to compliment the Loran that was on board when I bought her; had all new cushions and some foam replaced; had all new life lines, new sheets and new furler system put on in the past year. Engine is a Yanmar (8 hp) and is a little underpowered, but a great engine. Can live with the "underpowered" just don't plan to race it into port. All rigging has been tuned this year and had to replace a bow light. Had a few "trickles" from stanchions and hatches, but even I can fix those. Sails great and forgives a lot; solid (as I had her for over three hours in nine footers - not that I planned to have her there); very comfortable and has a lot of storage area for the size boat. Good Winds-- JAY
